For makeup junkies, 2010 will go down as the year that launched a thousand beauty trends! From the return of the glamazon red lip (the Simmons sisters got it right!) to the ubiquitous greige nail polish moment (grey plus taupe plus beige equals hot)—every beauty trend this year was sexier than the last. Here, we take a look back at the makeup, nail, and fragrance trends that rocked our world in 2010.
2010 was a very good year to be a celeb fragrance! When Mary J. Blige launched her debut scent ‘My Life’ in August, the singer sold sixty thousand bottles in one weekend, breaking HSN records. Meanwhile, Macy’s managed to sell $3 million worth of Beyonce’s first fragrance, Heat, between February and March. And earlier this year, Halle Berry’s scent, Halle, sold enough units to earn a spot as one of the top three women’s mass fragrances. Keep up the good work, ladies!
This year, celebs like Keri Hilson, Rihanna, and Kelis traded in neutral shadows for bold, vibrant shades like violet, emerald, maroon, and dazzling denim blue. To get the look, try Josie Maran Argan Eye Love You Eye Shadow Palette ($42, sephora.com)—it comes with the most sumptuous hues on the planet.
This year, nails took center stage! Celebs rocked wild, edgy colors—everything from orange and lemon yellow, to graphic patterns and multi-colored French manicures (like Kelis, left). Minx developed Sephora by OPI Chic Prints, an array of precut nail patches that made the phenomenon more accessible and affordable. And Creative Nail Design launched their Shellac Hybrid Nail Colour, a half-polish/half-gel formula that stays put for up to two weeks, no chipping.
If celebs weren’t rocking the uber-glam red lip this year, they were all about a pale candy-pink pout. The trend reached a head on Friday, November 26th, when Nicki Minaj debuted her limited edition MAC lipstick, Pink Friday 4 (left). Super-girly and cotton candy-hued, this shade instantly sparked a frenzy among lipstick lovers—especially since it’s only available online for four Fridays. Get it while its hot!
Whether you wore it on the inside of your bottom lid or blended on the inner corners, white eyeliner was one of the hottest tricks of the year! Long used by makeup artist to make tired, hungover models look wide-awake and radiant, a hint of white eyeliner always makes you look impossibly luminous. Try Sephora Collection Jumbo Eye Pencil in White ($6, sephora.com).
Lashes were bigger, bolder, and longer than ever this year! If you weren’t springing for lash extensions at your local spa, you were definitely stocking up on volumizing/thickening mascaras like Cover Girl Lash Blast ($6.99, walmart.com) or lash-lengthening primers like DJV Beautenizer Fiberwig LX ($24, sephora.com).
On the other side of the wild nailcolor trend was one of the most popular beauty moments of the year: The “Greige” nail. A cross between grey, beige, and taupe, this surprisingly chic neutral was all the rage—and it looked gorgeous on all skin tones, from the palest of the pale to the deepest brown. We’re still obsessed with Chanel Nail Colour in Particuliere ($40, amazon.com).
In 2010, winged eyeshadow was the new smoky eye! Instead of blending a dark shade allover the lid, makeup artists created a dramatic cat-eye shape that extended past the outer corners. Very Cleopatra! Note: Don’t try this look if you’re not in a center-of-attention kind of mood…
