I recently had the absolute pleasure of traveling to Cartagena, Colombia. I’m not sure why I chose this place. I saw one or two pictures on pinterest and booked the tickets without thinking too much. As the trip loomed closer, anxiety kicked in. All I heard from family (mostly older) was the danger factor, drugs and violence lingering from the '80s. I got conflicting information from colleagues saying it was the best trip ever. I read pros and cons on a million websites and I determined that you either love or hate this place. Now that I’ve been, I don’t see how you can’t love it IF you make smart choices with your time and your location. So, here are my top 10 reasons why it should be next on your travel bucket list. I'm so glad I didn't let fear hold me back, because inside the "Walled City" is pure heaven.
1. Luxe Hotels
You may not think luxury when you think of Colombia, but Cartagena has a bevy of chic, boutique hotels. This deluxe room with a terrance at Hotel Casa San Agustin will make it hard to leave to explore! But if you manage to, you’re welcomed back after a day of sweating with cool wet hand towels, a dip in their fresh water pool, and their cucumber house drink.
