#1 Gym memberships
You pay the fee but you rarely attend. Why not call your girlfriends and meet in the park or at the local high school track for an hour of exercise and laughter.

#2 Bottled water
You can say good-bye to nearly $550 over the course of a year. Instead, boil and bottle your own tap water. Or purchase a water-filtration system.

#3 Cell phone and cable bills
If you’ve been loyal, call the company’s customer retention department and ask about specials or ways to reduce your monthly bill.

#4 Brand-name drugs
Ask your doctor and pharmacist if a generic drug is available. And consider mail-order pharmacies, which often charge lower prices. Visit Vipps.info.

#5 Checking account fees
You can save more than $100 a year in fees by selecting a free checking account. Compare rates at Bankrate.com.

Are you paying for features on your land phone when you don't even talk on it, and the only reason you have the phone is for internet access? Cancel ALL the features including the message unit, because you use your cell phone anyway! You may save up to $576, a year! Invest that money into a money market or better.

These are all great ideas! As a person who is just starting out, I appreciate the advice (especially about bottled water). Right now, I pack my own breakfast and lunch and bring it with me to work. Cooking for yourself definitely saves you money and helps your waistline. Coupons have become my best friend when it comes to grocery shopping and I have learned to go ahead and buy whatever I can that's store brand. It tastes the same and it's about 30-60 cents cheaper.

Along with the other reader I also saved big not eating out as much and by paying all my bills at once, that way I know exactly how much "fun money" I have to do whatever I want with and once that's gone, then I don't spend anything else.

-When I go grocery shopping, I buy food that I can keep at work - soup, frozen meals, snacks, etc. instead of buying lunch everyday.

-Have meatless days (go meatless a couple of times a week). Have spaghetti w/o meat, baked potatoes topped broccoli and melted cheese.

-Shop the discount stores.

-Learn to cook (reduce eating out)

-read leabels for nutrition and eat healthy (you'll save on doctor bills)
