The way you share your thoughts can determine success or failure. To prepare for the next brainstorming
meeting, follow our tips on how to effectively present your ideas:
BE AN EXPERT. Know your topic, your audience and their interests. “The listener only wants to know what your
idea will do for them or their company and how you can make it happen,” says career and speaking coach Joel
Hochberger, president of Effective Presentations, Inc. (effective presentation skills.com). Deliver your ideas in an innovative and relevant manner, giving your listeners meaningful takeaways.
KEEP IT SHORT AND SWEET. The adult attention span has been estimated to be from 6 to 20 minutes.
“Martin Luther King, Jr.’s, ‘I Have a Dream’ speech was 16 minutes. So why do you need 45 minutes?” says
Hochberger. Remember that your audience consists of busy executives. Outline a plan that quickly identifies the
problem, offers a solution, and addresses any concerns.
HIGHLIGHT BENEFITS. Use examples that show the concrete payoff to the client. For instance, Lauren
Coleman, president and founder of Punch Media Group, says of a recent pitch to a cable network’s Web site for
a new digital series, “We pitched it with hot talent attached, knowing it would bring familiarity and less risk for
the buyer.” It helped seal the deal.
GET PUMPED! People are often afraid that being too enthusiastic will make them look foolish. But Hochberger
says, “No listener will ever say, That guy was too enthusiastic about his idea.’ ” In fact, they’re more apt to
notice if a presentation lacks excitement. He suggests talking to your audience in a one-on-one conversational
tone.
SHOW AND TELL. Use effective visual aids such as simple charts, pictures or videos. And don’t ask the
audience to read and listen. Visual aids should assist you in your presentation, not serve as reading material.
