Music today really holds no value to me, not like it did when I was growing up. Yeah, I know the artists today are at the top of the charts for weeks. BUT THAT'S IT!! When I turn on my radio, and hear a tune from Stevie Wonder, Marvin Gaye, or DonnyHathaway, it always results in the volume of my radio going up. My hands in the air, and Yours truly sounding like Nikki Parker. Heyyyyyyy!!! The list of artists I enjoy today is very short, which mean so is my video choice. Sex, Drugs, Expensive Material possesions. What happened to an Education, Giving back to your community, Family responsibilities, Church and a MORAL lifestyle or marriage. The networks think that by bleeping out foul language at certain points during the song does justice but I think instead it makes you focus more on figuring out what they didn't want you to hear. One of the most positive hip hop artists out right now that many people seem to overlook is Common. His video "The Corner" with the Last Poets is phenomenal! Not so much for the scenes (which are good enough) but for the lyrics and the respect being accorded to the elders in the industry! This is the way I remember hip hop. The revolutionary music I fell in love with, reminiscent of KRS-1; NOT the commercialized, misogynistic, bull crap that is being pushed by the music industry now. But something important to remember ladies, if we stop buying it for ourselves and our children, if we stop allowing our children to partake of it, they WILL stop selling it. True enough, most of mainstream “hip hop” is purchased by white, middle class, teens; but WHO I ask you is watching BET and purchasing the products pushed by that network? Us! We have the economic power to make a difference. We have seen it done before in Arizona; we know it can be done, so let’s get active!!!

He has a real problem with women and manitpulating how he manages to market his music and videos. think a more effective approach is to boycott the music and musicians who make music that offends you. If the club is playing a song whose lyrics who don't like, DON'T DANCE! If enough people clear the floor, then the DJ's will stop playing the music, and the musician will rethink their lyrics (and videos). DON'T BUY music from people who write lyrics or have videos that offend you. If sales go down, musicians will rethink their lyrics and videos. If a radio station, plays music that offends you, write them, call them, email them and their advertisers to let them know. They exist because you buy the products advertised on the stations. If you stop listening or stop buying, the musicians will reconsider their lyrics and videos.

| I definitely would put "I know I can" by NAS as the top Hip-Hop video on my list because it is a positive and inspiring song for everyone especially young boys and girls. Nas even lets girls know that they should not emulate themselves after what they see in music videos and that boys should strive to get their education and not look towards a thug mentality. I also love that he mentions my name CUSH which was a Kingdom in Africa. The chorus alone is such a great mantra for positive thinking. In 99 Problems Jay-Z is not talking about women when he uses the word "bitch." The song actually has a positive message -- have you even paid attention? He's talking about general stresses in life, like racial profiling and dealing with the music industry. He's just flipping the word in a different context and it's not against women at all. The knee-jerk reaction to write that song off without even analyzing what it means is so annoying and sadly, typical of people who don't know about hip hop. Plus the video is HOT, so i agree with Essence on that one!! But the list should have included more female rappers. All of Lauryn Hill's videos were dope -- why did she get no love on this list???
