Thank you for the article. I really helps to encourage those of us who have been there and who are there now. I had breast cancer last year. I had chemothrerapy and radiology. Loss of hair and loss of weight. I made it through all of that and am better for it. Therefore I have changed my lifestyle for the better in many ways and am cancer free.

However, we need MORE BLACK DOCTORS,especially f we need to always encourage our children to go into medicine. That is the only way we can get minority health issues addressed. WE NEED MORE DOCTORS IN THE MINORITY community more than ever, especially to address the needs of women. Please as parents do your part to encourage your children to go into the Medical sciences. As a future doctor with 2 other siblings in medicine, it is important to address the needs in our community.

Thank you Essence for such an article. MY HEART GOES OUT TO ALL THE SISTERS AND BROTHERS WHO HAVE BATTLED CANCER. Personally I have lost 2 family members to breast and throat cancer. The only thing we can can do best is to get good healthcare, exercise, and eat properly to help lower our risks. But we all have to consider that the toxic environment such as pollution, chemicals in our food and water put us at a greater risk than ever before.

Essence thank you for finally reporting something of "importance". I am a 27 year old Breast Cancer Survior ( I was 25 when I was diagnosed with Stage I). No one in my family had it. I actually found the lump through doing a SELF BREAST EXAM. I would like to stress to young women to be aware of your body (more than just wanting bigger breast) but take care and appreciate the temple God has given you. I did undergo chemo and radiation, and to those who do not take chemo because of hair loss, I say the hair grows back (thic

In Germany, diagnosed with non-hodgkin?s lymphoma in June 2006, around my 49th birthday. Did not allow fear to paralyze me. Informed my oncologist to accept the spiritual approach to my healing. Went to hometown church for one month in N.C. in 2007. 2008 No symptoms of my illness. *Juice organic fennel, carrot and celery....Remain adamant and straightforward concerning your health! Medical links are right on time! Thanks! -Sister in Europe-

Great article. I am a breast cancer survivor, Dec 08 will be 5 years. I too had to endure chemo and radiation, but did so with a positive attitude, I wanted to survive for my boys. Great article. My mom is a breast cancer survivor of 4 years now. My sisters, daughters, husbands, and myself have all had to change our diets and get a head start on preventive measures. Thanks again for the information.

Tip for prevention: Organic Foods. It costs more, but if we invest in our bodies today, we won't have to buy so much medicine later. We must minimize/eliminate processed foods because the preservatives and hormones injected into animals and gardens are not good for our bodies.

I am a 52 year old black woman who has just recently had a sigmoidoscopy, they found a polyp, but thank God it was benign. My grandmother died of colon cancer. I want to encourage anyone that is told to have screening done for cancer to please do so immediately. I canceled my appointment for screening four or five times trying to prepare my mind mentally which now having gone through the process it was not as bad as I thought it would be. I could have made matters worse if the polyp had not benign. It will be worth it to

I was diagnosed at the age of 30 2 years ago with breast cancer with 6 lymphnodes infected. I went through the chemo and radiation with a very positive attitude. My mindset was to live for my girls. There was no time to feel sorry for myself and ask tose typical "why me" questions. Survival was the only thing on my mind and it was truly God's grace that brought me through and God is still blessing me everyday!! Prayer, family, church-family, and most of all my children were my biggest cheerleaders!God is GOOOOOD!

I was diagnosed with Stage IIA breast cancer in Oct. 2006 at age 40. It has tremendously changed my life. I am currently undergoing chemotherapy. My only wish is that I would have been more careful at what I ate before being diagnosed. In spite of everything, God has given me strength to Endure this dreadful disease.

I totally agree with all of the advice given. After having my 50th year base line colonoscopy, stage 2 colon cancer was discovered. I went thru 8 months of chemo along with 45 radiation treatments and I'm happy to say my last CT Scan and Colonscopy cameback clear. Early detection, taking your treatments and having a positive attitude along with God on your side will save your life.
