Here are three beautiful, accomplished, dignified SINGLE Black women. I am aware numbers can be skewed to present a dire condition when taken in a broader context, the numbers do not reflect the catastrophy initial reports may want us to believe. However, I looked at this article and was reminded again... there is one number that certainly requires every Black woman and man to stand up and take notice... Where are the next generation of educated, Black men and women, joined in a husband, wife and childunit --- the CORNE

Yes, I understand that I'm a little late on reading this article! But anyways....I just wanted to say to all three of you young ladies that I really admire you all! I think you're very talented, gifted, and blessed! I'm only 22, but reading some of the things you all have said as far as your career, and being a black female in the business that you are in, I can also vouch and say that it is hard and stressful at times! I know I have my whole life ahead of me (considering that I want to be an Accountant and hopefully an Exec

I think celebrities are entitled to their own privacy just like we are as normal people. We should not depend on them to be role models for our children. We should be doing that ourselves. I also think if the media is going to report on all the negative things in celebrities lives, they should also report on the positive aspects.

Thank you essence for putting Nia Long, Gabrielle Union, and Sanaa Latham on your cover! It was so refreshing to see three young, beautiful, talented and accomplished young actresses gracing the cover of a national magazine. The only thing that was better was their wonderful interview inside. Please continue to showcase the beauty and talent of young African-American women who are positive and inspiring!

Oprah has had Sanaa Lathan on her show more than once...the last time was after Something New had been out for a while and Oprah was featuring interacial marriage. It would have been better if Oprah had given Sanaa a forum to promote the movie earlier but many were not touching Sanaa at the time because of the rumors that Had reached a fever pitch about her and Denzel and aa love child.

I do not believe that celebs should have to give up their lives. They also need their privacy. there is one thing that we as fans, paparazzi, and others fail to realize is that celebs are also human just like we are. People generally look for a reasonfor celebs to mess up. all we want to see is this picture perfect image that movies and magazines have given to us. They are capable of making mistakes. Sometimes we are too concern with celebs person life. we forget that there might be someone in our community or even i

Tameka Raymond- Do not defend your love for Usher. You need to spend this time building a foundation for your family. Spend this time in prayer because the devil and his spirits are working hard to bring you down and your family. I wish you the best and know that I am praying that your marriage remains honorable. Pray instead of defend. There IS a personal attachk against you and many have prophesied that your marriage will not last. All three of you make me proud to be an African-American woman. Just know that your struggles are our struggles and that makes you special. Just know that not all black women hate you and say mean things about you. You make me proud and want to work hardone more day. You are the African-American dream. I love you for being true to yourself. Thank you for waking up and deciding to have the black experience. You will be triumphant and victorious in 2008. Continue to represent for us all even in the face of adversity. Love you

I think all three of you should make a movie together. That would be like the best movie ever. I mean I know there has been some friends movies but that would be awesome because you don't have one together. And believe me most people are just jealous of you that's why they are hating just wish they could be you. I wish I had friends like you guys you seem close. Best of luck to you and lots of love!

It's not about the money or the job. It's about the person inside. Staying true to person that you are and not letting anyone take that away from you. It was wonderful getting an inside view of how Sanaa, Nia and Gabrielle are. That they (and also myself) are a work in progress. It really doesn't matter what type of work you do, you still run into the same nonsense on any level.

Nia, Sanaa and Gabrielle, you inspired me. I loved the article, you all kept it real, talked honestly about your challenges, fears and aspirations and I could relate. I've always loved Nia (you killed it in Love Jones girl) but this article made me feel a real connection as another sister in her thirties, finding her way. We have more in common than we have differences and we should celebrate that. Keep up the good work Essence!

I would just like to say that I am an older women and grew up with not a lot of women of color to admire and respect. But I must say that I truly admire and respect Nia, Sanaa and Gabrielle. They are successful, well grounded and beautiful young women of color and have their priorities straight. As far as the controversy of women wearing weaves v. natural. I myself do not wear extensions or weaves but I do relax my hair. We are all different and should celebrate those differences not hate on them. I could care less what

Tameka you are delusional. Where do you get off saying we black women don't like ourselves. The reason why you received gotten so much negative energy..is because people don't like your character...leaving your husband for usher and causing a rift in his relationship with his mother. if you where a respectable sister everyone would wish you well. Usher scrape the bottom of the barrel with you.

I think you rep what Usher has always loved chocolate sistas but I still think you're too old with too much baggage...speaking as a mother!!!! The marriage won't last. I know! Gabrielle started as a model with no acting experience so she's doing the movies she should be doing. Nia and Sanna have TALENT!

I say we're not doing too bad. Look what the white girls/women have as an example of beauty and how to be a lady. Paris Hilton, Nicole Richie, Lindsey Lohan, and the best of all mommy of the year Brittany Spears. I'll look to Nia, Sanaa, and Gabrielle any day. One thing about it Nia didn't get pregnant to keep a wanna be rapper like Brittany. Neither Sanaa or Gabrielle have been in rehab once a month. Nor do any of them have a sex tape floating around.
|
|
-Something to think about
|
|
So I wonder what does Nia, Sanaa, and Gabrielle have to do to prove to the black community that they are black enough? According to other bloggers the weave means they are trying to prove themselves to the white media. So because they wear weave and maybe they have had a nose job does that alone mean they are not in touch with themselves? Since when does weave mean you don't love yourself? Does loving oneself look the same for everyone? To coin a phrase from someone I know "JUST DO YOU BOO" Whatever thatlooks like. Unbeweav

|
Hey what's with the weave vs natural hair debate? Why does one have to be bad and misrepresenting and the other is automatically better. I've just come out of wearing my hair natural in 2 strand twist for like 2yrs. I also experimented with extension twist which required that I have hair added to my hair. Right now I'm wearing my hair press and curl. I just see these differences as options for women to change up their style. Not good or bad just options. That's what being a women is about, the option to change your mind.

-Let's embrace our differences

Oh My God one blogger actually thinks that her $8 she spends at the show to see an actors performance means she owns that actress and she should be at the publics beck and call and take pictures upon request no matter what. That's crazy! Everyone needs time to enjoy a meal without interruption. Put yourself in their shoes for a moment. Would you really want to be disturbed every time you went out?
|
|
-Where's the Love?
|
|
Nia, Sanaa, Gabrielle love you all but you have to start getting in touch with your natural black beauty. stop trying to compete with the white women in Hollywood. The long strait weaves, noise jobs, faded skin, etc.Work on self-love, you don't have toprove yourself to the white media, like you said, they don't care about us anyway. Black people need to stop putting each other down, we need to bond together, support each other, and stop writing derogatory, pathetic comments about each other on blog. white media does

Essence did a disservice to all of us by not showing the ladies in their natural beauty. They are all airbrushed with weaves to look like Caucasioan women. I thought Essence was to celebrate blackness. How do you justapose Sanaa not having a chest onthe cover and then show her with a large chest attending the party. It is obvious that Sanaa, though lovely, has had a lot of work done. She had a different nose and no chest duing Love and Basketball

As human beings we have every right to be private and it is achievable. It is your choice if you choose to open your life to the public or not base on your actions and words. Unfortunately, there are individuals who have nothing else better to do than togossip and makeup superficial stories. I am interest in the story that an actress/actor portray's onscreen not their personal life.

To Drama, How can you say Sanaa not posing is sickening to you? When you go out with your family or friends for a private dinner, you would be annoyed too if someone kept bothering you. Unfortunately if you present yourself to be a public figure, you have to expect some negative / untrue press to go along with the territory. These lasies are beautiful and allbut they need to tone down the shallowness a bit. Sanaa should be proud that her people love and support her work that they want to take a picture with her. Especially, since she is not a constant TV/movie fixture. Nia really needs to move past the trophy mindset and focus more on obtaining status as a amazing actress as say, Cicely Tyson. Looks and pics fade but talent does not.

I was so done with at lease Sanaa and Noa after reading this article. Sanaa and Nia were the most snide and egotistical of the three, which surprised me because I always thought is would have been Gabrielle. Do onto others as you would want them to do unto you. The people who are probing in the celebrities business would not appreciate it if that treatment was done to them. There personal life should remain just that Private!

I think Nia has grown a lot since becoming a mother, Gabrielle appears much more insecure since her divorce, and Sanaa is beautiful but now operating in the real world. None of them are leading ladies. If one of them were to make it, it would probably be Nia since I've seen her beauty cross over in a few films. I just hope she can stay away from negative publicity. I do like that she is down to earth. Be grateful for what you have. It's more than the average woman.

To the sister talking about Black women wearing weaves, what do you think white women are doing? We always assume a white woman's hair is he own & for a black person to have hair, it couldn't possibly be real. Part of the reason for wearing a weave is versatility & to protect the hair from constant overprocessing. No woman of any color can take all that Hollywood requires on a woman's hair. White women wear wigs & extensions more than you know. Even JLo does it to change her style & color at the drop of a hat. It's to

cont'd....affair) And being a Black actress in hollywood myself, my 2 cents on the "colorstruck" issue is this. When your denied a role cause you aren't the right shade of brown, it's not okay. When your told your not "black enough" for a role it's not okay. When Hollywood only embraces the light skin black woman as the dominant representation of Black beauty, it's not okay. Trust! All this and more of the struggle continues to play out behind the scenes in both Black and White Hollywood. In 2007!!!

yaadie fi life: You asked when will Black women give up weaves. My answer is: When pigs grow wings and fly airplanes. Weave to me is like water is to thirst. I need it, want it, and love it! If I choose to spend $70 on Remi Velvet hair and I spend $150 to have my stylist sew it in, you better believe I did it to please me, and to turn a few heads. It's no different than my gorgeous natural sisters. Our hair is our crown and glory. Whether you grew it, or sewed it shouldn't matter. The point is - IS IT TIGHT? IS IT RIGHT!

Privacy and Star-Status is an oxymoron, and should be understood for those who choose a career in the limelight. It takes a certain type of person to sustain the critics, haters, and lovers alike. These three ladies are survivors - the type of survivors that the haters must respect, and the rest of us love dearly. They have shared their true feelings towards the rumors, and it's understood. I pray for their continued strength towards the opposition and jealousy that faces them. They chose extraordinary careers, and it's thei

Of course celebs should have privacy - they're human beings. Whether they act, sing, etc. that is just their job, not to down play what they do. However, I think celebs as well as all people should be positive role models, especially to the youth becausethey're more impressionable. I think certain people do have more of a responsibility than others, this includes: entertainers, managers at work, parents, teachers, Preachers, CEOs, etc. "any individual that has people seeking thier guidance".

Johnnie Scott does seem bitter. Maybe, she is related to Pauletta. Even if Denzel and Sanaa Lathan had an affair, they both have moved on with their lives. Denzel is still with Pauletta with plans to celebrate their 25th wedding anniversary in June andSanaa is dating a football player for the Chicago Bears. None of us are perfect even if it did happen. Denzel is fine and I know must be hard to resist. Keep the faith Sanaa. Only you and Denzel know if this really happened. For others, it is only speculation and people

I would like to respond to the comment Johnnie A Scott made about Sanaa Lathan destroying Denzel's marriage. These talented actresses should be know for what they do and thats act. It's sad that we focus more on their private lives than on their art ofacting. It's sad that we get wrapped up in this stupid gossip and we actually believe it. How about focusing on the positive instead of the negative. Sanaa is a wonderful actress not a homewrecker. It seems like you Mrs.Scott may have a good bit of anger built up in you,

I believe that celebrities deserve their privacy like everyone else. They are normal people who chose careers that put them in the public eye but that doesn't give us the right to know everything about them. Actors, Singer, Rappers, etc. are artists andI believe artists are natural exhibitionists, but we as the public should respect their privacy.

Hollywood doesn't give roles to natural black women. Essence isn't about natural hair: they push weaves and relaxers. Anyone who thinks natural hair is more expensive need their head washed and examined. Perm heads rarely wash. We've all smelled it - standing near you on the trains/elevators. Natural hair is wash and go, no drama, no hair salons, and not expensive. Who cares what folks do with their hair anyway?

I agree with Johnnie Anderson Scott. I read the article in Reader's digest as well. Late in 2005 and early in 2006, Denzel let Sanaa explain to everyone that they were not involved in an affair which no one believes. It was so embarrassing that she would address the issue in Vibe magazine which all the stations picked up. I am bewildered that Essence would put three ladies on the cover whom they know have reputations as homewreckers.

I would like to advise Sanaa Lathan to read the December 2007 issue of Reader's Digest. There is an article entitled, Denzel on Faith, Family, and the ONe Thing He'd changed. In this article, he asks viewers to join the discussion and give him some suggestions for something to get his wife for their 25th wedding anniversary. Since you almost destroyed his family, you might have some advise for Pauletta or have you learned your lesson. Get your own man that is not married

Just Between Us Girls: Nia Long, Sanaa Lathan and Gabrielle Union - I loved their interview. It allowed me to realize that they are really just real black women with real issues like all of us. Tyler Perry proved that when we do our own thing Hollywood will open doors to produce movies and TV shows. So what is the excuse for the rest of them? There should be many black films per year - on TV, in the theatres - everywhere.

There is no way that I would let my 11 or 12 year old get weave. That starts off with sending the message to your child that they're natural hair isn't beautiful. Rather its texture or length. Of course its more to hair than just washing and moisturizing. You want keep ur ends clipped and even. Keeping things out of your hair that damages it.
|
|
-Glennisha Morgan-www.glennishamorgan.com

3. The truth is that a lot of natural styles are even costlier to manage I totally disagree with this statement. Wash, detangle, keep moisturized is the basic hair care for natural styles. Twist, braids, twa's, locs, straighten and curl are not more expensive than weaves wear and care. People should wear their hair anyway the feel great about themselves, but most parents cant afford a weave for 11 and 12 year old girls looking a mag pics.

To Anonymous. I totally disagree with you. Why do so many black woman say that natural hair is harder to manage etc. Its about finding products that work for you. If you can sit in the hair salon for up to 4 hours to get a perm and style you can spend 1/2 or even less time styling ur natural tresses! I wear my hair natural. It's actually less management then when I had a perm.

3. So, little girls looking up to Black women with cool natural looking hairstyles may be dissappointed to find out they can't afford the style or upkeep. 4. Do you have Black natural hair because depending on your texture, you may find it extremely time consuming (more than relaxed hair) or difficult to manage unless you can afford your own hairstylist to do it for you every day.

To mahamat: 1. Saying that more Black stars should wear natural hairstyles is like saying more white women/men should stop wearing weaves and coloring their hair blonde. 2. Most people follow trends, remember the mullet or farrah fawcet look was the rage. Extensions for Black women are especially trendy now while some women like myself still opt for manageable braided extensions or locs/curly fro, etc.because they never go completely out of style. 3. The truth is that a lot of natural styles are even costlier to manage

We always hear that its hard for Black actors and actresses to get work and that we don't see them on the screen enough or represented equally but how about instead of waiting on someone else to hand you a job you create the job. i should add that i am equally amazed that people need to be told to eat healthy and get exercise as though this is something new. it's the little choices we each make everyday that make the difference. so if someone wants to stitch in a weave or glop on some chemicals so their hair can be straight... it's up to them. just like if someone wants to fill their face with sugar, fat, etc. all i ask is that people think about their choices.

There are sistas of a lighter hue being featured in the media as the only black and latino representatives ALL the time and we say nothing seriously about that. But let us say we proud to be brown and somehow we are expectef to justify why we said it. Please. I will say it again "Brown". Is just as beautiful.

Great article! I enjoyed the candid, honent and inspiring dialouge between the sista's. It's a refreshing change to see Hollywood actresses who are grounded in faith, determination, & realness.

when will black women give up weaves? it is soo incongruous to have black magazines spouting racial identity when everyone we choose to caption inevitably has luxurious hair which we know is not growing from their roots (pun intended)

As a 55 year old retired black international economist, I thoroughly enjoyed interacting with these 3 young spiritually-inspiring, successful and empowering black actresses, as I read this article. Thank you Essence! I would be remiss though if I didn't point out by disappoitment in the need for Essence to include "brown" in paragraph 2, final line, ESPECIALLY after the previous piece on "issue of skin tone in the black community"! This "skin tone issue" reflects an underlying tension that BLACK Americahas to deal with

@Swiffht.. LOL.. I like to see Jill in something other than those alcohol commercials!! Now to Halle..Aside from Their Eyes Are Watching God, Things We Lost in the Fire and Dorothy Dandridge. she really hasn't starred in a role like that.. My thing was that she gets dogged for Monster's Ball, but I think she did a good job cause it showed that she wasn't scared to take a risk.. Now she's not in the media for baby daddy drama, drinking, partying, affairs and keeps to herself. Yet, she still gets dogged by folks.

These Beautiful Ladies inspired me in this article, I loved what Nia Long says about loving yourself before you can love anybody, and these ladies show positive images and true responses about this world, If these 3 ladies been through tough times, We all need to sit back and look in the mirror and ask "Who am I" I'm Somebody" because they did!!!!!

I am a fan of these three. Especially Sanaa, Love and Basketball is still my favorite movie and Disappearing Acts. Nia is also great. And Gabbi is fierce. I think every actress bring their own character to a movie. So its important to get more Black Films in the making. Because I would love to see more of you girls in the movies. But I know its hard out here. Because I am a single and educated black woman, and I tell you its not easy. I have to comment on the Blogs, because I read them also. And I want to point out m

I ADMIRE THEM FOR THAT! On to the blogs.... I am a blogger! There are 2 black blogs that I check on a regular! (YBF & Concretloop) And they always speak highl of these women!

Miyan, In case you didn't notice, Halle's is not stepping out of her "comfort zone". Lately her "comfort zone" seems to be playing the helpless mulatto to white male fancy. Check out her last movies. I think Halle is dealing with some issues having to dowith white acceptance and embrace! Whatever happened to Jill Marie Jones?

How about Lauren London, Sharon Leal, the doctor from Grey's Anatomy, Tamara Tunie ( Law and Order/As The World Turns) Tasha Smith, Jill Marie Jones, Chandra Wilson, Kandi Alexander, Zoe Saldana, Thandie Newton ? There are plenty more black actresses outthan these 3! Stop recycling these overrated actress!! And please stop hating on Halle cause she's not afraid to step out of her "comfort zone" and play ugly and gritty characters ( not counting CatWoman..lol)

all 3 of these sisters r very beautiful and represent black women very well on the big screen. it was very nice of essence to feature them however it would have been even nicer if they had the sisters without all of the weave. we as a people REALLY need to get away from these eurocentric images of beauty.

I think the article was "real" these women, women who are put on pedastals by men and women, deal with everyday issues just like the rest of us. These women are all beautiful, but they are not perfect. For them to share their insecurites, fears, hopes and dreams, made me feel like I was sitting in a room with my "girlfriends".

Stop hatin'...I was very excited to see Essence feature these ladies together talking about real issues that effect them. P.S. Nia can't help that her son's Father lost his mind in the mall..I know I wouldn't want anyone to judge me based on MY ex-husband's behavior.

Oh how boring. Why couldn't Eseence bring some new talent on the cover for December? Something new that will bring the Black arts into the fore front. Essence you need to start setting the example not bringing up the rear. By the way all 3 I love, just wanted to see some one else being featured who has not had a cover story before.

I truly think Essence could have found some sisters to put on the cover besides these three who all have bad reputations with either drinking too heavily(Gabrielle,)baby father drama(Nia) and dating a married man, Sanaa. In addressing the issues, will Sanaa ever admit to the affair. Keep in mind Denzel did not deny it in his Cover on Essence in April 2006. I thought Sanaa and Regina Hall were good friends...why isn't she included?

I think that it's such a positive thing to see three REAL women on the cover. What makes each one unique is that they are all flawed in some way, but they still manage to be so graceful and elegant at the same time. I don't care who did what when. Al these women deserve to be celebrated.

Essence, show the true beauty of each sister without the weave giving them the Caucasion look. Let their natural beauty show. I saw Love and Basketball over the weekend and it is obvous that Sanaa Lathan has had a lot of work done; however, since she is now 36, I hope she has gotten past the affair with Denzel washington and hat the football player with the Chicago Bears will marry her. She probably damaged her chances with a good brother by being associated with a married man, Denzel. Make them geta divorce before get

I think it is good to see Essence put three talented actresses on the cover of the magazine even though all three have had much negative publicity. Sanaa Lathan was one of my favorite actresses until the affair with Denzel washington and most black women in America view her as a homewrecker. Additonally, Essence would not do a cover of her when her movie, Something New, came out because the rumors and news was so hot with her affair with Denzel washington. Additionally, why can't black beauty be appreciated. They do not n

Just wanted to drop a note to encourage these beautiful sisters, I am almost "30ish", and I have read this article and can relate a lot with some of these issuses, concerning prejudice and drama in relationships, I wanted to encourage you ladies that from this end I see the market shifting for us as women of color, more marketing, more jobs, more exposure, our youth are hungry and I think we are in for a shift within the image and perception of how we as women of color are perceived. A lot of thanks has to go to our young me

Wow! I've just had an opportunity to read the blogs and I'm stunned that there is so much dialogue about the women's hair. Nia explained it in her interview on page 274 quote "...if I didn't have to go to work and deal with getting my hair and makeup done by a white crew...I wouldn't have a weave. If I felt like I could go in there, and they could take care of my natural hair-but they don't know how to." Does it really matter whether they wear weave? It seems no one tears us down as much as we tear each other down!!!!!!

When rolls are far and in between for women of color in the movie industry,at the end of the day these women still must earn a living doing what they love to do. Remember the days when white women were playing characters who were supposed to be black, native american, and asian. I am overjoyed to see more women of color who represent me on screen and I think we should support and uplift them because it is not always easy for them.

Kudos to these beautiful black women for remaining friends and supportive of one another while still competing for the same limited rolls in Hollywood. I read the previous comment about how many times can Nia, Sanaa, and Gabrielle play the same rolls. Well I don't think it is their fault that these are the only rolls that the industry feels black women can protray. It's easy as outsider to say that they should turn down this same rolls, which I'm sure they are tired of playing themselves, but when rolls for black women in the

Life is about growing up and making the right decisions in life. I truly give lots of kuddos to Nia, Sanaa, and Gabrielle for telling the world that they care about themselves and their future. It is challenging being in a business where people will doanything just to make money. Yes, they may have all played roles that people did not like, however it was their decision. And why is it when Halle's acting or chose of roles is being harshly judged, then it's justified? I'm still scratching my head over that. No one is denying the fact that these are beautiful sisters, HOWEVER, they haven't grown as actors. We as black women need to support and protect each other more than we tend to do so I will first say "Job well done" and you make me very PROUD to be a black woman. Some of these negative comments are better directed at actresses like Halle Berry and her total lack of shame in the demeaning roles she has taken lately. I think all 3 women are magnificent actresses. To all my sister behind the negative post....We have to STOP putting each other down and embrace one another. To Keisha NC - I don't think I am at all being judgemental by responding to your comment. You are judging these women based on RUMORS. I am commenting and making a decision about you based on WHAT YOU SAID. You insist on believing rumors and I think that's unfair. All of these women are truly beautiful and talented. It does not matter if they choose to wear their hair natural or with a weave, what matters is that they are happy with who they are.
