I believe that Mariah Carey is the greatest artist on this earth, no matter black or white. Mimi, you're my idol and there's nothing more I can say.... you're my inspiration baby!

-Ivana

Black Heritage is always seen as something that "magically" disappears when we are mixed. If a Chinese/English/Hawaiian/Irish person can claim their entire heritage, why can't we proudly say we are Black when we mix with others? All of this stuff is a result of centuries of racist European rule.

D.C. Beauty IF Halle and Alicia don't look black then what do they look like? Like white people?!! Halle was called a NIGGER when she went to Australia years ago by a cab driver. Do you think Jada Pinket Smith looks white also? I gues the only black people are the ones who look like Wesley Snipes or Alek Wek

-Osona Davis--The only bi-racial people who can pass as white are those that look like Brad Pit or Brittney Spears. Did you know that Lenny Kravitz is half-white? At the beginning of his career as a rock star he said that it was very hard for people to see him as one. They expected him to be a rapper because they thought of him as a BLACK MAN because of his appearance. Please get your facts straight. Faith Evans is half-white too but know one in their right mind would see her as a white girl or "allow her to play both sides

you can't change the fact that the woman is half black. she has never denied or tried to be more than what she is . people need to grow up and learn to live with the fact that the cover of that magazine is not going to change . not any of you are 100% black like you say. deal with it and get over it.

People are you listening to the insensitive comments you're making? Human beings are the same regardless of their skin shade. You should all know by now that race is a social construct invented in order to keep some members of humanity under mental and physical oppression. I'm an early childhood educator and I have students of all "race" and ethnic background in my classroom. They do not see each other as Black, White, Purple , Green, Violet etc. They see themselves as "equal" to one another. And I teachtolerance and mutual

Tell em osona cause if Allure where to have Whitney Houston on the cover with the statement that she is white there would be some fighting as the child put it on their forum too

You should have your own web site girl!

-Donna

Thanks,

your right no one will admit to it they never do

-Osona Davis

angie not really i just don't like them taking opportunities away from real blacks but quick to mention or show that white parent to get better treatment later just as the lady on other pages said

osona your darn right girl

-Anonymous

Osona Davis I agree with you on all of your comments completly it's funny how no one will admit to that fact that mutlt racials are only black when they need to fit in with blacks and that a real black person can't play both sides of the fence

-100 %black too

so you seem to take issue with people who are bi-racial, huh?

-angie

It would help if both black men and women would but I don't really care what bi racials do I just wish she and all other bi racials would stop taking acting jobs away from black people by claiming to be one

-Anonymous

Halle did date Wesley at a time when BOTH needed media attention to help promote their film careers. They used each other for maybe less then a year.

-Carl

So black/ bi-racial women to prove their loyalty, have to date a visibly black male to be accepted in the black community where as a black male simply being black, all the while dating non black women, are accepted merely because they are black? WTF !!

-brenda

If she did date Wesley it must have been for about a week to gain acceptance with black people when she first started out

-Anonymous

Brenda

she never dated wesley snipes she is not black and these days she sticks to light black men other bi racial men like herself she and Mariah stick to their own and there is nothing wrong with that

-Anonymous

"she never dated any man darker than a brown paper bag"

so that real dark, dark film actor Wesley Snips is lighter the a brown paper bag, i think you need glasses!

-brenda

I would never put a black woman down for dating outside of her race but Halle is not a black woman she is a bi racial woman and she never dated any man darker than a brown paper bag

-Anonymous

Halle Barry has not only dated light toned black males.

Halle has dated a rainbow of men of color from eric benet to Wesley! Who by the way is not man enough to be with a strong BLACK woman and is married to a Asian. You cant put any black woman down for dating / marrying a non black men , when black men have enjoyed 'tasting the rainbow' for years!

-brenda

So true they both stick to their own

-Anonymous

Darryl, Halle only dates light black men and other mixed men so she not much different than Mariah

-Anonymous

Darryl,

She can gravitate to whomever she wants. If she's part white, then this is just as natural an inclination as white.

She grew up with her WHITE mother, after all. Her father wasn't even around much.

And if you're going to refer to her as a mutt, I'd suggest you take a look at your own geneology. My guess is that your no purebreed either (keeping with the dog theme.)

-Lilliah

Why is it that people who are of mixed heritage, who constantly want others to know that are mixed, seem to date only white people? Mariah is from group of mixed people that gravitates toward white--which causes the identity problem. (that is what they get!) Halle Berry, on the other hand, is from a group of mixed people that gravitates toward black---no identity crisis there. Mariah gets what she deserves. No sympathy for the poor, misunderstood, mutt.

Yolanda, if your comments where the same as Barbara's they sure didn't read like it.

I hope that you do not believe that I really think that all mixed races are a result of slavery and rape - this point was made as an example. I don't have the chip, I'm trying to spread love and stop the hate - you totally missed my point.

-Yolanda

Why don't black people have enough love, pride and respect for thier race not let just any one claim to be a member of it.Give multi racial people there own title not ours, the sooner we stop claming them sooner we can focus on more impotant things

-Osona Davis

Barbara, my sentiments exactly!!! This is really the point I'm trying to get at - whether mixed, PURE black, black-latino, etc... Black people need to stop judging and start loving!!

-Yolanda

mariah should be ashamed of herself having essence put her on the magazine and say she is black, come on ppl she only has a little black in her,how does that make here a black woman. she is giving black woman a bad name.

-Osona Davis

Yolanda, yes of course I get mad at opportunities being taken away from blacks by other races but there are certain opportunities that are set aside just for blacks, scholarships, grants, acting jobs, etc these are taken by mixed people who are only black when it?s convenient real black people can?t mention or show a white parent to receive better treatment and as far as your other comments go, please read what I have already said on the previous page. -Osona Davis

Race DOESN'T EXIST. It's an artificial construct to try to categorize and identify.

Black women, get over yourselves and your past. If you're the children of slaves, remember but you have to move past it, because holding onto it will only hold you back.

Case in point: Every so-called mixed person you think you see is not the result of American slavery, but are European or Latin American immigrants, or the product of a perfectly normal household.

-PhD

Not all mixed race people are the results of rapes and slavery. Geez. Tiger Woods, anyone? The sooner you realize that, the better you'll be able to deal with the new paradigm. Get the chip off your shoulder.

Many people are the result of mixing, including Latins Americans, Armenians, Greeks, Italians. Pretty much EVERYBODY, no matter whether white or black, is mixed. Get over it. NOTHING NEW.

People in the U.S. who are so-called mixed are American, they're here to stay, they're growing, and hopefully they won't be confu

-PhD

Osona, I applaud you for being PURE but what does pure really mean? Are you just as outraged that other pure races have taken opportunities from "real black people"? What is your definition of the "black race". Your exclusion statement borders on the same thinking as Hitler!!

-Yolanda

Yolanda, I agree with you on some points but I have seen too many mixed people take opportunities away from real black people, seen to many of them play both sides of the fence. skin tone aside These people are not members of the black race and should be excluded from it.

-Osona Davis

Anonymous, Your wrong I AM PURE if you met me you'd swear I was african and I would not be mad if she said she was white becasue that would be closer to the truth she and all other bi racial people are not one race or another THEY ARE A WHOLE NEW MIXED RACE OF PEOPLE.

I agree that none of us are pure when it comes down to it ? just remember this is a consequence not a choice.

In this day, we as Black people, have far better issues we can be taking on like? why is there only one Black person in the Senate, why do we continue to face racism and discrimination, etc? But then again how can we challenge racism when we are raciswithin our own race!! We are doing exactly what society wants us to do ? Hate one another by whatever means necessary. -Yolanda

After reading all of your comments I am quite saddened!! It is so disheartening to know Black people are still judging one another after all the oppression and life struggles we have experienced. Being of mixed races is a consequence of the hundreds ofyears that our black women were raped and tainted. One of the most cruel effects of slavery is the division amongst our people ? we are still holding on to the fact that those that look white are better or worse. In this day, we as Black people, have fr better issues we c

I think you mean that your parents both ID as fully black, despite what your actual DNA is.

Anyhow, I'm sorry you're misunderstood.

-Detroit!

Hey Sacramento,

I HATE to say, but maybe you need to think of the possibility that your parents ARE both mixed, generations back -- do you know your heritage back hundreds and hundreds of years?

Mariah assumes the race of whomever she's with because she probably is of the same mixture or has an element of the heritage of the company she keeps.

Evidently, you must think you're "pure" black somehow -- I hate to burst your bubble, but it sounds like you're not. I think you mean that your parents both ID as fully black, de

I am a light-skinned black woman from 2 black light-skinned parents who is constantly accused of being mixed by both white and black folks. I regularly have to correct white people, who assume I am half black, because they seem to gravitate toward the non-black of me that isn't there!!White people feel comfortable with light skin, and I don't blame black folks for speaking up and telling the truth on this subject. Mariah effortly assumes the race of whoever she's with at the moment that's why she's confused. She should ta

-One Mad Black Woman in Sacramento

Laura,

That's what I'm saying - Mariah hasn't said she was black or white.

This is why I disagree with the title. When did she identify as a black woman? She's said she's mixed, which evidently is different.

-Sallie

I would like to first say, Mariah did not ask to be born into this world. Now that she is in this world, what makes anyone, body, person, human being cast judgement on who she is as a person??? There is a an old saying that comes to mind....Misery loves company!

Keep your head to the sky Mariah!!!!

Doris

-Doris

sallie, she has never said she was just black or just white. she mentions all of her heritage. just because she doesn't run down the street yelling " i'm black " doesn't make her less black and it doesn't make her ashamed of who she is.

-laura

i can't believe that this is still going on. how can you put someone's racial background in percentages? that stupid and ignorant. there is nothing that anyone can do about the cover. the issue is out and nothing that you complain about will change the fact that she's on the cover. so get over it!!!

-Anonymous

Why are you comparing the 2, Beyonce knows who she is and Mariah is confused! Beyonce dyes her hair Blond BUT most of the time it is brown! How many damn interviews is this women going to go through dealing with her racial issues?

50% white,25% latin and 25% black, how does that equate her to being a black women?

-Me!

<cont.>

When you're mixed, you have the choice to be whatever you want to be.

End of story.

-Sallie

Dehj,

The point here is that SHE doesn't say she's black -- at least directly. That's the issue.

I don't care what you look like or what you're mixed with; if you say you're not black then YOU'RE NOT BLACK. IF you say you are, you are.

Being black is amentality nowadays, not a skintone, hair texture, or any other feature alone.

So just as mostly white people can claim they're just black, they can also claim they're something else -- white, Hispanic, mixed, whatever.

When you're mixed, you have the choice to be

-Sallie

beyonce acts the same way she's just darker i dont see you saying crap. It people like you that give a reason for this issue to exist.

-dehj

black. ok.........and marrying a black man dont prove your blackness i meen how come the men can marry outside and other races and then you ppl hate on yourself. Also her father is dark just like Beyonces father maybe darker. He is so dark you wouldn't even think he was from South America he is dark. So stop judging people on the outside and saying things like oh know she wanna be black. She is black.....dont say she wants to grow up dont let the bottle blonde died hair fool you and the straightened hairgeez......beyonce ac

-dehj

yes she does just because she dies her hair blonde know and wears lighter makeup doesn't mean she always looked like that. She didn't look white growing up have you seen her childhood pictures??? obviously not so stop assuming. She looked mixed it ws obvious she wasn't white so stop being racist. Why can't people stop judging people I bet you essence asked her to do the article and your all hating. I love the way Joan morgan has wrte this article its articulate and different from other journalist.............

Mariah Carey is a great and inspirational woman........

you guys did a good job on this article in potraying her ellegance and beauty......

-Tanner

mariah has never needed to " be black " to sell records. she sold more records when she was marketed as a white artists. so why would she backtrack and " wanna be black " for the sake of selling records? like i said we all aren't pure black and that is THE TRUTH. if this woman would have said i'm white people would be mad. so she's saying she's black and ya'll are still mad . no wonder she chooses not to be called either because both races have issues.

-Anonymous

Oh, so Mariah Carey is black now? Gee, that's news. Who will you all put on the cover next, Britney Spears?

-Name Withheld

I only mention my coloring because unlike Ms. Carey there is no question as to the race I belong to I can't change my race on a whim or to sell CD's.

Like most other black people there is no reprieve from the discrimination in the world for us this unfortunately is also what it means to be truly black

-Osona Davis

If you would read my comment correty you would see that I didn't say dark was 100% I said I was 100%

-Osona Davis

Well RRayan that's your thing I know my history from the very begining it's been passed down from generations and it is all various versions of black people we pride ourselves on the one rule that we "Don't do the swirl"

So Yes I am 100% and proud

-Osona davis

The entire trin of discussionlisted below shows among other things where the discussion has not progressed and a lack of intelligent study. Things are complex. BTW who said dark is 100%- I can easily trace my family to Ghana, no one ever thinks I am American and guess what- I too am mixed- BTW- so is 90% + of the US(BBC News Program) and much of the world- there is very little pure anything anywhere

-RRyan

I am sometimes surprised by the dynamics of Amerian commentary... yes the race dilemma is real the light dark etc etc. however, should a child - who is from a loving mixed family where there is respect for both sides not want to acknowledge both sides. I think there is a way to do that and still identify with the black community. The key as always is balance.

-RRyan

Exactly Osona.

There are many types of black beauty, no doubt --

but when mixed people are shown as examples of black beauty, it undermines black beauty entirely.

Alicia isn't beautiful because she's black -- she looks white with a suntan.

Halle, Alicia, and others can say they're black -- that's fine, but don't tell me they look black (esp. Alicia).

People who are mixed should be able to id as they want, b/c calling them black is changing black beauty to a new -- more *white* standard.

-D.C. Beauty

Mariah should focus on her talents and strengths as an artist, if any, and not digress to using the race card to win popularity.

Funny how she didn't make any grand claims before, but suddenly she needs us now.

-Incog_In_DC

well racially nin both uk and america it leaves alot to be desired as only nearly 40 years ago did america's martin luther die needlessly plus countless others who have been killed because of t he colour of their skin. it happens in the uk also but it is not so publicised.

-judith williams

What?s next are going let Britney Spears be on the cover next month claiming to be black also?

-Anonymous

The only reason she?s even agreed to the title of a black woman now is because white people don?t care about her anymore so she?ll come to us for support. She, Halle Berry, Michael Michelle, Shamar Moore and many others are just examples of how thesexed people are taking opportunities away from real black people whose race can?t be changed (though tanning) or ignored at a whim. Real black people even in this day and age still have struggles and understand the race isn?t just a color but a culture, source of pride and

As a dark skinned (%100) black woman how dare you say the Mariah Carey is a black woman as well, when by here own admission she is more white then anything? How is this little 25% present enough to land her the same title I and many others hold so proudly? She and mixed people like her are not black but another race entirely (Let them get their own magazine if the don?t have one already). As a black professional I encounter subtle racism everyday, but I endure it and move past it. This woman has no ideahat that?s like the

It is not my intention to hurt Ms. Carey's career by no longer supporting her.. as I said before, I wish her well. I merely stated my view. For you to comeback with such a childish remark highlights your lack of maturity and intelligence. All that was missing was a "nah, nah, nah, nah, nah" at the end. I think you're the perfect fan for Mariah.

-Anonymous

none of us are pure black . that's plain and simple.

-Anonymous

In that case NONE of us should id as black then, right?

Cause my mother is black, native american and my dad is white and asian. People mistake me for being hispanic all the time.

-Carl

You all are just afraid of blacks splintering off into other groups.

But guess what -- more people are realizing that there's no need to identify as just black -- when they're NOT.

-- Anonymous

Vanessa,

If you're more white and Native American than black, and you identify solely as black, then that's your problem.

But don't try to push that kind of thinking on other people with the same mixture that don't identify as black.

-Christina

Black does NOT overpower the other races one has in them. If my great great great great grandmother was black, and the others white, are you telling me I'm black?

HAHAHAHAHAHA

It's not a matter of shame, but of logic and sense.

-Delia

Mariah Carey is just like Tiger Woods! Full of self-hate and ashamed of having black blood in their veins! Let them GO people , just LET THEM GO!!

-ann

First off, every one on here that is talkin about her not being black, is all ignorant. Obviously, if the damn girl got black in her no matter how much it dominates all other races. I am a multiracial woman and I have more white in me than I have Black and Native American and I look at myself as being a very succesful young Black woman. And please don't use the term "MULATTO" . It's a spanish term in english it means a mix between a cow and a donkey.

-Vanessa

Essence: This story is crap.

The day you stop making up titles to sell magazines is the day I buy your mag instead of reading it in the store, laughing at it, and leaving it for someone gullible enough to buy it.

i love that you did a story about mariah. she often does not get credit for being an african american woman I love her music and have been a fan of hers for a long time and i think she is mis understood when people find outi like her they often make meancomments about her not wanting or not admiting to be black which is wrong its even hard to catch her songs on the urban radio stations or see her videos on black tv programs it strang to turn on the tv to bet and see jennifer lopez all day long and hardly ever see mariah so

-sb

Some of the comments on here are so ignorant. Whatever race Mariah is, should have no effect on her music. She is a good artist that reaches out to many races. Take it or leave it, she's gonna make money and records whichever way she displays her race.

-a loyal fan

when THEIR truth is wrong they really don't have a right to veiw her as they wish.

-Anonymous

I didn't like the article. The writer seemed to miss the entire point made by Mariah and her cousin by writing the last sentence.

I think Mariah herself is endlessly tripping on the being beige issue, but she has a right to be anybody she wants to be.

The public has a right to view her as they wish based upon their truth. Once she is comfortable in her own skin, she wont care what people think of her.

Despite Jermaine Dupri's professed ignorance, most blacks could tell Mariah had black heritage. By the time she work

-just black scholar

Anyway why is it that we think Creoles should identify as black(despite having mostly french ancestry) but not Latinos(who have just as much African ancestry). Its just an ugly heritage leftover from when slavery was legal in this country.

-Keef

I think its ridiculous to say Mariah is not black, becuase she has only a quarter black ancestry. None of us, dark or light, are of pure african ancestry. Saying you are black just shows a solidarity with the black community as a whole. No matter your african racial percentage. Its all silly anyhow. Jasmine Guy has always identified herself as black despite being half white and Jennifer Beals has never really ever really said that she is half black. I love them both the same. Why is it that we think Creoles should identify a

-Keef

I think Essence magazine sold out on this one... so to Essence I say: thanks for the hype (sarcasm), thanks for salt in the wound... if Mariah is mixed and is personally not comfortable with being limited to choosing one specific ethnicity, why choose the title you did for this story? This story's headline is propaganda 101 - looks to me like Essence was using "blackness" and our issues to sell magazines... it may not be right, but we are still dealing with this race thing and it should be acknowledged and addressed careful

-louis manon

i'm still trying to figure out how anyone can measure someone's blackness. there is not a pure blooded black person in america unless you came straight off the boat from africa. how does it help your career to be black?

-Anonymous

If you're as mixed as Mariah is, then she shouldn't have to identify as just black.

Why does being part black have to overpower every other ethnicity in a person? It doesn't.

Some mixed people have a problem with being just black because they know it unfairly snubs the rest of their heritage.

-Krissa

If you don't know who you are, then no one else will

-Black Southern Belle

Why is Mariah still using her identity crisis to promote her career? I'm so tired of mixed-race people who claim to be misunderstood. It's only an issue when THEY misunderstand themselves. I too am mixed, but if you ask what I am... I will proudly tell you that I am Black. It doesn't matter if I'm 1/8 this or 2/3 that. I think that only matters with multi-racial people who have a problem with being identified as Black. You hear it all the time... I'm Black but I'm also this, this and that. If you don't know who you are, then

-Black Southern Belle

And no she probably did not choose the title for the cover but she sure as hell approved it. Essence did not release that with out her ok.

-nicole dixson

How dare yall say " Misunderstood BLACK Woman" the only thing this article did was solidify how UN-Black she is. Why dont yall post a real black woman on the cover? And no this is not another person just looking to trash ol poor Mariah, and tell her how un-black she is. But what she really needs to do is get back in touch with her 75% other race. Cause if that 25% blackness can get her on the cover of Essence and sell a few million records the her goal to get in touch with her black side has been accomplished.

People, peolple, people. African American or "Black American" is not a race, it is a mind set. We are people of mixed races; mostly starting with African lineage (our common denominator) . We are the true esential of the term "melting pot". Our only common thread is the "The African Continent". [Not even a certain country.] Respect the diversity and build on the unity. We are divided on an American term that many of us do not understand and allowing the misunderstanding to divide us into shallow, meaniless species. Go w

why do people on here call mariah black? mariah carey is not black she just has black in her but she is not a black woman she is a mixed race woman, why is it that if someone calls her white they get corrected but if they call her black they dont get corrected. she is more white than black anyway. and since she is hispanic too why not just say that mariah carey is a hispanic mulatto?

Clearly you have no idea what you speak of. I didn't become a fan of Mariah's solely because of her voice. I did research to find out exactly what kind of person I was supporting. Sorry it took me so long to respond but I thought this rediculous conversation was surely over by now!!!

she doesn't care about selling more albums. she wants to do the type of music she likes. even if that means lesser album sells. she was doing better as a " white artist". so it really doesn't make any sense to say that she wants to be black because of album sells.

Some of you are so ignorant by saying Mariah wants to be black now to sell more albums. That is so laughable. As soon as Mariah was single and started living her life as a black woman, her sales went downhill. "White" Mariah used to sell way more recordsthan "Black" Mariah. If she really were money hungry, she'd be "white" and go back to singing pop songs such as "hero" and "dreamlover". Obviously, she identifies more with her black side by looking at her friends and the music she makes. This Mariah race thing is so 10 year

why is it okay to call mariah carey black but not white. i bet if she was half asian and half white or half indian and half white she would not be required to choose one race over another. i think that if mariah can be called black then she can certainlybe called white too, because her white heritage is not too good for her. that really gets on my nerves that people think that just because you are mixed you should have to choose a monoracial label.

-anonymous

Black Americans are confused, and don't know what they are.

There are so many people that have mostly white and non-black heritage, yet consider themselves black. Why? America has, rightly so, moved beyond the one-drop rule. It's time we recognized the fallacy of its logic too.

It was just a slaveowners rule! Don't perpetuate it! Just realize that there are many who are mixed that don't consider themselves black.

Why? Because they aren't.

I was a huge support of Mariah from the outset.... However, the "slutty" image she chose put forth both publicly and professionally was the first turn off for me. She has an amazing range, however constantly signing in the upper scale, became tiresome for me, so turn off number two. Lastly her associations with black people, SEEMED (to me, at least), limited to only those whose talents she could utilize in her career.

essence made up the title not mariah. i believe that she wants to move past the whole race issue , but others will not let her. someone said that she has never said she was black. she has never said she was white either. she wants people to know her as mariah a great singer and song writer. not mariah the half black girl who looks white and sings black. if she were a few shades darker we wouldn't be arguing about how black she is.

-Anonymous

I'm a fan of Mariah's older music. I think some people don't like her because she's too self absorbed and she always does that self pity role of having multi-racial heritage. A lot of people in this world have way bigger problems than that.

Mariah is exceptionally talented. With the matter of race, in America she is considered a black woman. Being African American is an ethnic characterization moreover than a pure DNA answer. We as African Americans need to know if any of us lived in PuertoRico,Brazil, or Peru, they would be calling us something different.Thats not let these political diffinitions confuse the question.

As for Mariah, its ok to be young, talented, sensual, and black. Its ok. Mariah needs to keep making her wonderful music and let her legacy st

I think she is once again misrepresenting herself but I forgive her for that. I still love her vocals.

She never claimed to be a Black woman before in fact she nearly denied it. So is Mariah Carey claiming to be black to sell more albums? I don't buy her being true to herself at all. Nowadays it's all about being true to money and that is exactly what Mariah is doing.

Continuing from above: Black people need to embrace our diverse history, instead of perpetuating this slave mentality, light vs. dark. I am a light skinned black woman whose looks are always confused with Asian, Hispanic, and a black/white mix. I have black friends who could fit the same description. Black people in American history have always been defined as having one drop of African blood. Thus, Mariah's issues are not new to this race, although her struggle, as the rest of us face, simply comes with the territory of a black woman living in the United States of America. I'll be glad when the day arrives that mixed race people can be proud of who they are and be accepted for who they are without the scrutiny of other people. Mariah Carey is by far (to me) one of the most talented and gifted vocal artists I have ever heard. Her race and ethnicity are irrelevant to me in that regard.
