  • Part of the fun of blending lives is learning how to blend your decorating styles. Start out by weeding out whatever doesn’t reflect your current tastes (i.e., dorm room leftovers from college days) and anything that’s just plain worn out (read: beyond repair or reupholstering). You might consider holding a yard/tag sale to minimize clutter and get rid of items you both agree don’t suit your style. With the money you make, you can start a slush fund to use to invest in furnishings you’ll both love.

  • As a newlywed, you may not have a huge decorating budget. Paint is the quickest—and least expensive—way to transform any room. Many paint manufacturers even have programs on their websites that allow you to see how different colors would look in your home before you buy.

  • You might be tempted to fill your space with furniture as soon as you move in, but don’t. You’ll need time to get settled in your space—to see which room has the best/worst light, or to decide whether or not you want to buff up the hardwood floors or install wall-to-wall carpeting, for example. Instead, focus on the basics—a good mattress and sofa are a good place to start.
  • If your kitchen is small (or even if it isn’t), you can display pots and pans instead of stacking them under a counter. Simply hang a pegboard of desired length. The solution is functional and the wall looks great!

  • Add some candles to create intimate settings in your home. They can make any room seem more serene.

  • Turn your bathroom into a private sanctuary. Light some scented candles or install a dimmer switch in the bathroom for instant mood lighting. Gather your favorite pampering products: soft, fluffy towels; bath oils and salts; shower gels; bubble bath, potpourri, vegetable-based soaps and your favorite CDs.

  • Simplify your space. You shouldn’t have your home packed with too much stuff.

  • Details are the heart and soul of any room and can be very affordable. An oversize plant, for example, adds life and a pop of color. The finishing touches are as important as the larger pieces—adding character and making the space warm and welcoming.
