J-P Design, Inc.—the small firm with a big practice—is the architect of record for the ESSENCE SHOWHOUSE. This Harlem-based, full-service architectural design firm creates innovative design solutions for a broad base of private, corporate, public and not-for-profit clients.
It was founded in 1992 by Zevilla Jackson Preston, a registered architect and graduate of the City College of New York School of Architecture. Zevilla is 2005 president of the New York Coalition of Black Architects (NYCOBA) and founder of The African-American Architects Roundtable for Entrepreneurs. She has taught design studio at CCNY, has been recognized as both a CCNY and CUNY Woman of Excellence, and has been included in CUNY’s publication, The Best and Brightest of CUNY.
Zevilla, who grew up in NYC during the height of urban blight and abandoned buildings, fully understands the social and economic issues that are key factors in exploring the physical space of urban communities. Sustainable Design—her architectural philosophy—speaks to a process of design that recognizes the interconnection of the social, physical and cultural vitality of a community and/or specific client—and is the premise behind J-P Design.
The firm is most interested in urban building types, the adaptation of existing structures for new uses, urban streetscapes and the nuances innate to community-based design/development projects. Design services include all phases of architectural work, from pre-design to post-construction.
Beyond her dedication to J-P Design, Inc., Zevilla has remained steadfast in her commitment to the Harlem community through a host of volunteer efforts, She is currently a board member of both The Children’s Art Carnival, a community-based children’s art school, and the Harlem Commonwealth Council, a local organization which is committed to developing the people of Harlem, as well as its physical existence.
