Winter Care for Your Hair
This winter, give your hair a break from the stress of everyday styling

Hot Curls
Leave your curling irons on the shelf with this fuss-free style. Pin curling or roller setting your coif is much less damaging than frequent heat styling and will allow you to wear your hair loose and free without a lot of manipulation and handling.

Stylist Diane Da Costa of Serenity Salon in New York City applied a quarter-size amount of Pantene Pro-V Smooth & Shine Anti-Frizz Serum throughout the hair. She then created medium-size twists and pin-curled each into place.

Once the hair was dry, Da Costa released the set and finger-styled the strands. To keep curls looking fresh, try twisting and pin-curling the desired areas at night as needed.

Short and Simple
“A great cut allows the comfort of minimal styling,” says Heather O’Kieffe of the Time Salon in Brooklyn. You’ll have shape without the daily dependence on curlers or flat irons. Instead it’s all about finger-styling or wrapping and being able to get up and go.

O’Kieffe cut the model’s hair in a short, tight crop close to the head and molded the tresses while it was still wet with Aveda Phomollient Styling Foam.

After drying the hair under a hooded dryer, O’Kieffe bent the ends with a flat iron. To spike your pixie, apply a dab of Sebastian Xtah Twisted Taffy Free Former.

To maintain the look, secure your hair at night with a silk scarf.

A Banging Bob
Forget daily flat ironing or high-maintenance curls. Use minimal product to keep your do bouncing and always be sure your style is free of split ends.

After washing and conditioning the model’s hair, O’Kieffe applied a dime-size amount of Redken Satinwear 02 Ultimate Blow-Dry Lotion for control, then blow-dried it into place.

To finish the style, she smoothed the ends with a flat iron.

Maintain by wrapping and securing the hair with a silk scarf at night.

Modern Rows
If your hair is screaming, “Give me a break!” this chic cornrowed style is a perfect way to let it rest. “With braided hair, the ends are protected,” says stylist Hadiiya Barbel (hadiiyabarbel.com). “You never have to worry about having a hair out of place.”

“To achieve a healthy head of hair, you should always start with a fresh mane,” says Barbel. Before you braid your hair, clean, condition and, last but not least, trim the ends, Barbel says.

]She then applied The Jane Carter Solution Nourish & Shine Hairdress to the model’s hair and brushed it to one side, French-braiding it back to the ends.

To finish, Barbel rolled the ends of the braid and secured it with straight pins to form a bun.

Thank you, thank you, thank you. I have been searching for the secret to this hairstyle for a while. I was one step away from cutting my medium length locks until I read the above article on Winterizing Your Hair.

At 11:00 pm last night I settled into bed to read your magazine. At 11:30 pm I was up pin-curling my hair. When I woke up this morning I didn't know the what the results would be. At 7:45 (15 minutes before I had to be at work) I took the pins out, ran my fingers through my hair and PRESTO! Today at work I recei

I wore dreadlocs for 4 years, then cut them off because I got my graduate degree and feared not being able to find the job of my dreams. Needless to say I didnt find the job of my dreams until almost two years later, after I braided my short afro into small, teeny weeny braids to start locs again. Almost wish I had never cut them from jump street. However, it is great to switch up with the seasons. Since it is winter- a great braided style or short crop is great for wearing under hats. Conditioning isa must-do.

I would also like to suggest another style. For women that has medium to long length hair. The body wrap! You simply wash and condition your hair as usual. Apply setting lotion of your choice to hair and comb through to ends. Use magnetic rollers andpins to roll your hair. Sit under hooded dryer. When dry, remove rollers apply oil and wrap your hair. After wrapping your hair sit under the dryer for five minutes. Unwrap and go. For maintenance just wrap hair at bed time. It's easy! If I can doit, you can too!
