Rihanna tells what happened on that dark and horrifying night.
UPDATE 11/6/09: Part 2 of Diane Sawyer's exclusive interview with Rihanna reveals what happened on February 7 and why their love was so volatile. "He was definitely my first big love. We fell in love with each other. To fall in love with your best friend is pretty scary. The more in love we became, the more dangerous we became to each other--equally as dangerous because it was a bit of an obsession almost."

What happened on that night? "I caught him in a lie. He wouldn't tell the truth. I wouldn't drop it. I couldn't take that he kept lying to me. I wouldn't drop it and obviously his back was up against the wall because the truth was right there in the text message. So, it escalated toward him getting violent toward me. It was ugly."

When the incident occurred in the car that night, thoughts went through Rihanna's head. "When is it going to stop, when is it going to stop. He had no soul in his eyes. He was blank. He was clearly blacked out. He was not the same person when I looked at him. I was bleeding. I was swollen in my face. There was no way of me getting home. My next option was to get out of the car and walking in a gown and a bloody face. I really don't know what was my plan. That whole night was not part of my plan.

"He was my best friend and we were in love, it just takes time. Love does not go away right away. He didn't accept that very well. Obviously, he didn't want us to be apart. I know had to make a decision for me. I don't hate him at all, I actually love and care for him. I'm concerned about him doing well. I want him to have a great life and career and grow up and learn. Take this as something you have to go through and grow up."--E.W.

Rihanna finally speaks out about what happened with Chris Brown

UPDATE 11/5/09: Rihanna tells Diane Sawyer on "Good Morning America" that she was ashamed. "I am strong. This happened to me. I didn't cause this. This happens to me and it can happen to anybody. There are a lot of women who've experienced what I did, but not in the public. It made it really difficult," she said. "There goes my little bit of privacy, something that somebody doesn't want anybody to know. The whole world knowing."

She continues. "I didn't want people to know that I fell in love with that type of person, so far in love...unconditional." Sawyer said it takes most women 6 or 7 times before leaving. Rihanna said, "8 or 9, actually. That's embarrassing. I don't want that to happen. That is not what I want to teach people. I'm a human being. People put me on a a very unrealistic pedestal. All these expectations. I'm not perfect. I'm human."

She continued: "The minute the physical wounds go away, you want this thing to go away. When I realize that my selfish decisons for love could result into some young girl getting killed. I could not be easy with that part. I couldn't be responsible to tell them to go back. Whose to say that some boyfriend wouldn't kill those girls. These are young girls. I didn't realize how much of an impact I had on these young girls."

On the very public incident with Brown: "It was a wake up call for me, big time. I say that to any young girl going through domestic violence. 'Don't react out of love. F love.' Look at it for what it really is. And then make a decision. Love is so blind." -- E.W.

Rihanna Breaks Her Silence: "Now I Can Help Speak for Those Women"

UPDATE 11/04/09: In her interview for the December 2009 issue of Glamour magazine, Rihanna describes feeling violated by the circulated image of her bruised face.

"That is not a photo you would show to anybody," she says. "I felt completely taken advantage of ... like people were making it into a fun topic ... and it's my life."

She also criticizes the media frenzy that swarmed the 21-year-old at such a delicate time.

"I went to sleep as Rihanna and woke up as Britney Spears. It was like, 'What, there are helicopters circling my house? There are 100 people in my cul-de-sac? What do you mean, I can't go back home?'"

In the end, the pop diva believes that there this a positive element to this experience.

"The positive thing that has come out of my situation is that people can learn from that. I want to give as much insight as I can to young women, because I feel like I represent a voice that really isn't heard. Now I can help speak for those women."

"I am stronger, wiser and more aware. You don't realize how much your decisions affect people you don't even know, like fans."

She also discusses how much of her new LP will be pulled from this rocky year. "I've put everything I've wanted to say for the past eight months into my music," she says.

please let God work this out between the two. No one is perfect it will take a lot of counseling and rehab for both.

Every black women know she got mad when she read the message and attacked him while he was driving and he got tired and hit her back. he went ova board do to anger....but come on he driving the passanger had the upper hand. How did her hand get bit while he was driving? It was in is face thats how!!! Hello! She was a sell out for that! Yes, leave him but dont ruin his life to save urs!

Isn't it normal to this about a EX boyfriend and what you guys use to do together and what music you would listen to? That is sooo cliche. She doesn't know what love is and neither does he..they're both STUPID morons.

We can all sit here and judge what happened between them. We are neither one of them. A man should not ever lay his hands on a woman. I do not wish for anything bad on neither of the two. I do not think it would be a good idea for them to get back together, but we can not decided this for them.

Mocha97: I agree with you. Rihanna initiated, more than that, she started hitting and going off & wouldn't let it go instead of caring more about her own safety and walking away.
She is still very much in love with him (1) she never says never and says she's not God so she can't say what will happen in the future, (2) she still talks about him in almost glowing terms, (3) she knows her part and is not being honest and somewhat (not bad enough to not take advantage for her cd sales) somewhat feels bad he is taking all the heat, but more people have gained clearer vision since it happened and realize a lie when they see it and know it's not all him.
I have much more respect for him taking responsibility than for her taking none when she needs anger mgt. counseling too.
If HE has any sense he'll leave this troubled girl alone!
Rihanna is not among the millions of really innocent abused women out there.
She's a drama queen like many I know who go waaay too far and dare a man to hit them when they need to stop being stupid and take care of their own safety first rather than allowing their temper to get them into situations like this that they caused. That needs to be the lesson for this generation of young girls, walk away first.

I'M NOT FEELING THIS VIDEO, OR THE SONG AND ON THE SAME NOTE, I'M NOT FEELING ANYTHING ABOUT THE WHOLE ALBUM. IT'S DARK, EVIL AND DEPRESSING. THAT GIRL IS BEING PIMPED OUT REAL BAD. SHE IS ALWAYS NAKED AND IN BLACK. SHE USED TO LOOK SO RADIANT AND YOUTHFUL. NOW SHE LOOKS DARK AND SAD.

I feel Rhianna initiated this nightmare that her and Chris have been living. Chris made a mistake. We all do! However, you don't ruin someone's life over it. None of us are without sin/ mistakes/ errors. None of us are perfect. He is young and learning. So is she and I really hope that she gets the help that she needs. It really bothered me that she did that interview as if she was so innocent. She has always been the "good girl gone bad" way before this incident with Chris. It kills me how everyone is so quick to judge and hang him out to dry. WOW! Will the perfect people stand up! So sad. I have been in an abused relationship as well so YES I can speak on this topic from experience. I'm sick of Oprah, Rhianna and everyone else milking this situation dry at the expense of someone else's life. None of us should have to suffer FOR THE REST OF OUR LIVES for a mistake we have made.

"100,000 somthing are in interracial unions i ment" about 400,000 somthing.

marrysomethingelse, BTW, This is ESSENCE.com not meet black mail order brides or you looking for wifey/ WIFE.COM. You're being completely irrelevant. What's wrong with you? You sound like a cry baby.

marrysomethingelse, I will try to go easy on you since it's sunday...Ummmmm sweetheart, there are roughly 30 somthing million blacks in GOOD OLE America with about 4 million blacks that are married and only 100,000 somthing are in interracial unions. Fact, Most white women marry their own kind and don't marry black, darling. SO WHY ARE YOU TOOTING YOUR HORN?Am I missing somthing? The media is brain washing you good too. You are just like the thug lovin black women. LOST! Please, read up on your marriage statistics .....

She said in her interview shes a role model PLEASE! If I had a daughter I wouldnt let them listen to her new stuff or watch this video. Wrong move Rhianna. On a better note Chris Browns new cd seems like its going to be very good I dont think he should have done what he did but thiers alot not being said and I think Rhianna has lost it since that happened everything is so dark nothing positive she needs to get help.

@marrysomethingelse
You could just decide to have a preference and not feel the need to berate an entire group of people. No one wants a narrow minded simple person like you anyway.

-On another note..I like Rihanna's work. It is unique and edgy. People who feel the need to spew hate at this woman should find a hobby.

to: "BW don't like you either"

Wow! you are completely in denial. Even as far as accusing me of being a woman, a black woman. Does it make you swallow the bitter pill easier? BW like you are the reasons we don't want to marry your sad as*es. Go ahead and find your "thug" to love. Infact guessing from your post I can probably guess the kind of BW you are:

1) Single- bitter and angry at any woman with a man and therefore hate on any woman to make yoursel feel better

2) racist- hate on any race thats not black because they're your competition

3) loves thugs!!! more specifically: "Kanye West's wif degrees". gets your a*s beaten and expects everyone else to get their a*s beaten as well.

conclusion:
not dating a BW= peace of mind!!!
PEACE! (MARRYSOMETHINGELSE)

I watched the interview its believeable but there still seems as if some key information is being with held. About the video is disturbing and not ina good way. Your playing a game and real life people die from this very same game. I understand the reason for choosing the song but at sametime poor judgement with both the video.

Wow, I can't believe some of those comments, clearly these women have never been in abusive relationships before, and even if not, no one knows all that happened, everyone is speculating but to say she's a liar and to say 'how can you beat someone while driving' is completely ridiculous!! Wow and this coming from other women makes it more unbeleivable. I know where Rihanna is coming from, I've been abused and there is no way anyone can really know unless you've been there. Either support her or keep your negative ridiculous comments to yourself, you sound so stupid critisizing her for being abused and telling her side of it, come on people really!?!. It amazes me how you believe everything you read from gossip sites/papers, those are all speculations as well. A nation a dumbed down idiots. uuuggggghhhhh....
