"Precious," the hardcore drama about incest, sexual abuse, literacy, the welfare system and survival in urban America did huge business at the box office it's opening weekend--it's was in limited release. The film, an adaptation of The New York Times Best Seller "Push" by Sapphire, opened in 18 theaters and earned $1.8 million (or $100,000.00 per screen, more than 10 times the average for a new film).

The movie was directed by Lee Daniels ("Monster's Ball" and "Shadow Boxer") and executive produced by Oprah Winfrey and Tyler Perry is already getting Oscar buzz. This type of box office engagement will only help boast the profile of this independent film with the Academy. Daniel's "Monster Ball" garnered Halle Berry her Oscar for Best Actress in 2002. "Precious" stars Mo'Nique, Gaby Sidibe and Mariah Carey are receiving Oscar buzz for their breakthrough performances. The movie also features strong appearances from Paula Patton, Lenny Kravitz and Sherri Shepherd.

Cindy Lou Who...Oh how I feel sad for you....It must just be horrific to live in such a place where your own pea-sized, narrow-minded brain has distorted views on the atrocities of the history of this country. You have offended me--and I'm WHITE!!! You are exactly what this country needs to purge itself of. I don't care what race you are----You ARE IGNORANT and thats just plain sad...Perhaps you should do something intellectual for a change---read up on what your talking about first. I may be going out on a limb--but perhaps you can finally shed that shameful oppressive veil that has you smoothered in the falsehoods of a warped historical view on black people as a whole...Go to a library. Phone a friend. Hell, call OPRAH!!!!

This movie captivated me from beginning to end. I still don't know how, as an avid reader, I let this book slip by me. Mo'Nique's performance was absolutely stellar. She embodied all the emotions of a cruel, subdued by anger, hurt and confused individual. I took my 18-year-old w/me. Sometimes you have to remind children how blessed they are. Here this young lady is suffering and has suffered her entire life and is still prevailing over every obstacle and beating every odd. Great, Great, Great!

@ cindy lou
you have a lot of nerve talking about slavery, your race raped and molested many slaves during the times of colonialism. we only developed these ideas because of the slave master. don't simplify you skewed sense of history to justify incest in the black community. white people have been raping and pillaging every race since the beginning of time. as for the movie, A plus with honors.

I Thought the storyline was great, and the acting was phenomenal! I'm a 30 yr blk female and was utterly disgusted that the film was only allowed to be released in certain citiesl. I feel as though people are trying to sabotage the success of this film! I encourage everyone over the age of 17 to go see it, but i will say that it had a lot of profainty and is not something i'd take my child to see

I loved the movie, it was very sad and informative of how someone can allow their own child to be molested because of the love of a man or woman. This story had everyone's mind going from the beginning to the end. I hope that people can just take pieces of this movie and learn from it, because it is a life long lesson!

Well, well, well, How long would it take for some ignorant white person (Cindy lou who) to rear their ugly head. Then again there is no racism in America.

Everything we do, your crap a$s A-moral community turns on us as if WE lead the way in SIN.

The movie IS great-BTW

We have our own stories, God will judge us.

I'm glad that the film did well in the venues that it was shown, I just got confirmation that the film will be shown in my area in Connecticut on 11/20/09, I can't wait!!!

THE MOVIE WAS PHENOMENAL...JUST SAD TO SAY CONNECTICUT AS MANY OTHER SMALLER CITIES AND STATES DIDN'T GET A CHANCE TO HAVE THE OPPORTUNITY TO VIEW PRECIOUS...I HAD TO DRIVE OVER A HOUR TO SEE IT...AND YES AS I SIAD IT WAS WORTH IT! I JUST KNOW FOR A FACT IF IT WAS AIR IN MANY OTHER STATES IT WOULD OF MADE OVER 1.8 MILLION...POSSIBLY DOUBLE!!!

Cindy Lou, where did you do your research?
I almost find that comment malicious; or perhaps you are completely ignorant to the facts. Please keep your unscrupulous self-taught speculations to yourself.

This sort of thing is commonplace in the black community and stems from slavery. Many black men would breed with their daughters because the mothers were too tired from picking cotton all day. Thus resulting in endless cycle of child molestation.

It drives me insane when people leave posts with mispellings and overall terrible grammar. Get it together people!

OMG!!! This movie was off...the...chain. Everybody left out speechless. The director, Lee Daniels, did an awesome job. Monique tore it up!!! Gabby was Fabulous!! I'm still in awe of the movie on Monday and I went to see it on Saturday. I went to the 10:30am (Atlanta-Stonecrest) to see it and it was sold out, then I tried 11:45am, that was sold out, so I ended up going at 12:20 and the place was packed! Everybody in the movie did a splendid job (Paula, Mariah, Lenny, Sherri, Monique, Gabby). It was deeeeep, intense...I swear, that Monique is off the chain. Great job!

The truth is oh so painful but it's what makes you stronger and more determined to succeed. I to am a victim but I'm also a survivor by the grace of God. This movie will let others see what we had to deal with and how it affected our growth...but we are still here and standing strong!

go to the film's website and find out when they will release in your city!

im in Richmond, VA and they wont be coming to my town until Nov. 20th! and some other cities have to wait til December!!!! but as long as we go and support when it does show up, then we'll be better off in the future for more films like this!!!

Annie stay on topic. This topic is about child abuse/ child molestation that was portrayed in a movie. I have a son too, so you're not the only in that category. My son always tells me boys should not hit girls; he studies karate and he doesn't like to spar with the girls because he's scared he'll hurt them. His father and I must be doing the right thing if he already has respect for girls at a young age. I'll see you'll be bailing your son out of jail for domestic violence.
