Oprah Picks Up The Tab for Mom's Clothing Store Bill

Oprah300_WEBuse-this.jpg

Oprah's mother Vernita Lee made headlines last year when it was revealed that she owed a high-end clothing boutique in Brookfield, Milwaukee $155,547.

The boutique sued Lee for failure of payment in 2008. Lee's attorney's argued that the shops owners should have never given her that much credit because of her payment history.

The owner of Valentina boutique told a local newspaper he would be receiving payment, though details of the agreement have yet to be released.

I didn't even know that Oprah had a mother. I mean I didn't know if she was alive or dead, didn't realize they even had a relationship.

I believe the mother is grown and has all her mental faculties...and knew either she had the money to pay or not ..the person Oprah needs to make this plain to is her MOTHER.

Simple.

If her mom didn't owe the amount she would've been charged for it.

If her mother had not charged that amount than it would've been owed. Just because you have a line of credit, it doesn't mean you have to use it. Her mom should be taught to have more control over her spending.

I agree with Southern Diva. The store only gave her the credit because she was Oprah's mom. They fully expected to embarrass Oprah into paying it which she finally did. I would not have. She should make it known that she is not going to pay for anything she does not expressly give permission to the store to provide the person, family or otherwise.

From what I've seen and heard in past interviews/stories on Oprah's life, Ms. Lee probably made it VERY CLEAR that she was Oprah's mother and the shop owner obliged. Unfortunately like anyone else who "name drops", it's not them that has the fame/fortune/future, it's the "dropped name." Some people/places/things don't change.
