Does Sci-Fi Blockbuster 'Avatar' Have a Racist Subtext?

AvatarSciFi_article_.jpg

"Avatar" may be number one at the box office, but on the blogosphere and Twitter the buzz is growing about the film's supposed racist subtext.

The premise of the movie is simple and somewhat familiar: a White man goes and lives with the "natives", learns their ways and somehow becomes their leader. If it sounds familiar it may be because the theme has been visited in movies like Kevin Costner's "Dances with Wolves" and last summer's South African sci-fi "District 9" says writer Annalee Newitz on the sci-fi blog I09. Newitz calls the all too familiar plot "a fantasy about race told from the point of view of White people."

In films like 'Avatar' she continues, "Humans are the cause of alien oppression and distress. Then, a White man who was one of the oppressors switches sides at the last minute, assimilating into the alien culture and becoming its savior."

Will Heaven of the Telegraph questions why the Na'vi (the blue skinned "natives") wear African jewelry and dreadlocks and are voiced by Black actors like Zoe Saldana, Laz Alonso and C.C.H. Pounder. "The ethnic Na'vi," he writes, "need the White man to save them because, as a less developed race, they lack the intelligence and fortitude to overcome their adversaries by themselves."

On Twitter, where "Avatar" continues to be a trending topic, conversations are not steering clear of the race issue. "Which is more racist, avatar or HP computers?" tweets one "Dr. Cop." "Why would I go see Avatar?" tweets screen name Savage575, "If I wanted to watch a racist, badly written, poorly directed, FX masterpiece I'd just watch 'Stars Wars' again."

Have you seen "Avatar"? Do you agree that it's revisiting racist themes?

Well, i just watched the movie and i totally saw racist theme in this movie, after watching it i turned to google with a question"is avatar a racist movie and boom, several people are talking about it. Well, for those of you who don't live in africa, the character or theme of the Navi people is actually borrowed from Africa. we have tribes like the turkan, karamanjo and masai that dress like the dress code portrayed in the movie, also the sudaneses are very tall people. Even the language spoken is all done to imitate a sound from africa. The invasion of the alien land is again an ideal borrowed from the old story of europeans colonizing africa. there were two groups of africans, those who collaborated and those who were resistant. Europeans came with advanced weapons africans had very little to defend themselves. what i think is WRONG is to use existing character of people here on earth as aliens from another planet. That is what i think is SAD about this movie.

"Greed is Good". This is the culture being protrayed as the Evil Empire in the film. Not 'white' culture; never does it explore historic Irish, Italian, English, Germanic, or any other culture.

"I think that the original settlers of America did not want anything more then to be left alone to do things how they felt they needed to be done."

US history from colonization to 1877 is not a pretty affair. There was brutality from both sides, but the clear fact is European settlers commonly betrayed Indians through "business" deals. So what you "think" is merely misguided idealism, American settlers came to make a profit on the frontier because they couldn't make money in England. It's hard to say "we did the best we could to preserve the native inhabitants" when populist US president Andrew Jackson smugly called himself "Indian Killer". Time in again business interest meant killing Aborigine cultures in order to access the natural resources they live on.
Public education of American history has been "white washed", try attending a college.

Yes, other countries more than Europe were involved in Empire building and brutal expansion. The Mongols are certainly an easy example. Present day even China is busy working on Empire building taking over Tibet and parts of India.
But how fair is to condemn their culture when presently "Western" Corporate culture is what has been driving the "Greed is Good"

"If you continue to say it's all white peoples fault then you will forever be controlled by the ones you claim are your controllers."

Again, youre mistaking race for classism. If you don't believe that management has a policy of keeping wage depressed in order to increase profits maybe you should get a real job. Money like 15/hr to 20/hr is a pittance for the profit an individual makes for a company.
Look around you, worker productivity is up, profits are rebounding, and still wages and bonuses are on reserve.
Have you tried getting a loan since the credit crisis? A crisis which was caused by a Laissez-Faire oversight policy from a Neo-Con SEC.
The simple fact is the U.S. middle class of skilled workers is not treated with dignity in the work place anymore. Once high paying jobs such as Information Technology are under constant threat of outsourcing. Outsourcing which the U.S. Government (to this day, despite campaign promises) provides tax benefits for.

Try working a few years in the system and see what comes up, hardwork and determination is nothing to management. Those who are promoted are those who have social ties and connections. Ivy league education means nothing more than a state university education (sometimes worse). But an Ivy league social network means everything.

So think about what is missing on Earth and what the director was trying to portray in this new planet, Pandora. On Earth there is very little land left where you can live independant of money, debt, and mortgages.

Then industrialist European settlers came to the country in order to make a profit of wealth. By means of warfare, lies, disease, and guns did the Europeans (now Americans) settle and take over the entire continent from shore to shore.

I think that the original settlers of America did not want anything more then to be left alone to do things how they felt they needed to be done. You cant just assume that all the settlers who have ever left there county behind want to start wars and take over land. I also think that it is ridiculous for people to think that white people ar the only race to ever colonize different countries. many civilizations in the past have tried to take over the world or spread there values and there people from cost to cost. At some point you people(bloggers of this article) Need to read some history books and look at other races and see just how alike we all really are. If you continue to say it's all white peoples fault then you will forever be controlled by the ones you claim are your controllers. If you say the white man rules the world and the white man makes all the decisions then tyhe white man always will in your eyes and there is nothing you can do about it.

There is no ware except a class war. The movie is part of the corporate culture taking over balance of nature. There is such a disproportionate balance of wealth in the country, and a growing oppression on social climbing. In this world we live in now, we can't live with nature apart from the society. There is no longer a wild frontier. How can this movie not be right for the times we are in now? A movie about not just preserving nature but also restoring social balance as well. Something I think a lot of us need to feel again; that even though insurmountable odds face us with unity and hope we can win.

What I'm concerned with in this article is how it's equating balance with nature and genuine happiness to idiocy. All the corporate workers are borderline insane, many with anger issues. The Na'Vi are the ones who are at peace with themselves and life as it exist, and this is what we've lost on Earth.
At one point the entire Americas was inhabited by a similar such culture. Then industrialist European settlers came to the country in order to make a profit of wealth. By means of warfare, lies, disease, and guns did the Europeans (now Americans) settle and take over the entire continent from shore to shore. And not just in America, in anywhere in the world settlers decided to claim "Empire" did this happen. This movie is such a view of what could have happened had the Native people won.

The "savior" Jake Sully is not smarter or faster or better than the Na'Vi. Jake Sully is merely a vessel to guide the viewer from preconceived notions to the culture the Na'vi live in. In fact it is neither he, nor the Na'Vi army he helps assemble, who defeats the corporations army. It is actually the nature and wild animals that turns the tide. Jake is a cultural bridge and I thought it was appropriate to show him being the underling of the corporate culture eager to regain his status and wealth, but rejects it all when he realizes what life in a world without wealth really is.

i heard there was a leaked version of the movie plz post an answer if u know where i can watch it online

Please read all the way through before condemning me.

Friday night I saw Avatar for the first time. I walked away from the movie feeling hurt and offended. In looking online to see if my feelings about the film were shared I came across this website. I am grateful for the postings here as I had not seen the movie from the predominant view of the postings here.

I am grateful my perspective has broadened. Towards the end of the movie I began to get angry as the "whiteman" was being portrayed as a destroyer of anything non-white. Yes I am a "whiteman". The attitude of many on the planet Earth (many yes - ALL? NO!) is that the "whiteman" is nothing more than a scourge and destroyer, who lives only to dominate, oppress and abuse the non-white. As the totally evil white general was starting to attack Hometree, the African sounding drums began to pound and sadly to say it ruined the film for me. The reverse bigotry that exists in our world, to me, was quite evident. I became convinced that the purpose of this movie was to perpetuate hateful attitudes towards the "whiteman".

Then I discovered this website.

As I began to read these comments, I came to realize how offensive this movie could be to people groups that have been oppressed by the "whiteman". It saddens me that the movie could/would be seen as a condemnation of African and/or non-white people. I totally agree with many of the postings here that see the "whiteman" was cast as the savior and how the "primitive" Na'vi HAD to have a savior and the "whiteman" HAD to come to their rescue. How offensive and what a slap in the face!

To those who have posted here, thank you for helping me to see another perspective and to change my view of the purpose of this movie.

I am amazed at how totally opposite viewpoints could be obtained from seeing the same movie.

Perhaps John Godfrey Saxe's version of the famous Indian legend, THE BLIND MEN AND THE ELEPHANT, really does apply!

All saviors are "bi-racial", this includes Jesus the Christ. If you recall he was an angel, the Son of God, in genetic human form, a body was prepared specifically for him.

Well the film was definately anti-white, so yeah pretty racist.........

Tarzan Movie of 2010.

Really? You gonna compare this movie to Tarzan. Have you ever watched Tarzan. What does that movie have to do with this one. How can you take a old jungle book movie and compare it to a movie like this.

Typically I avoid blogs like this because they present no resolution to the problem at hand. It seems to me that most of the bloggers suggesting that racism is a figment of people’s imagination have never been subjected to extensive discrimination or racism. I can admit that hundreds of years of oppression and discrimination based on race have made some people overly sensitive to current cultural events. I can also say that the majority of racism that occurs today is not done intentionally or consciously. However, racism does exist and Avatar had some very serious racial undertones despite its brilliant special effects. In my opinion this is a Tarzan movie circa 2010.

Racism does not have to be an intentional act carried out by mean spirited individuals. Racism is not exclusive to Whites only. Virtually everyone in America treats people differently based on skin color, whether done consciously or unconsciously. There are plenty of “good” people who treat everyone with respect but would disapprove of their child marrying outside of their “Race”. Unfortunately that is a racist attitude. This will only be solved when people realize that Race is a man made concept and not a fact of biology. Melanin is the pigment in human skin and hair and nearly everyone has it. "People of color" just have more Melanin. We are ALL the same. That’s why people can mate and have “mixed” race children. Humans can not mate with other species. In Avatar, the humans mixed the DNA of humans with the Navi DNA. Perhaps I am just ignorant but I am unaware of any example, naturally or artificially with today’s technology, where humans can mix with another species. Humans can not mate with dogs, sheep, or monkeys. There is only one Race and that is the Human Race. The only difference is the way we look and act; and that can be independent of ancestry.

Avatar used race and species as if they were synonymous. The characteristics of the Navi were loosely based on African tribal people. An old time stereotype is that Blacks have tails. Another stereotype is that Blacks are like animals. The Navi hissed like cats and displayed strong animal like characteristics. Is it really that hard to see how some people could walk away from this film offended? However well intentioned and brilliantly produced this film was, it still has strong racial undertones. Some people can just see that more clearly than others.

Not racist at all. The Na'vi were taller, stronger, wiser and more "fit" in the evolutionary sense. All the humans had was their technology and greed. Wait a minute... you are right... it was racist... it was anti WASP!
