Director Lee Daniels Talks About Making 'Precious'

Lee-Daniels_articleWEB.jpg
"Precious" is one of those movies that sticks with you. It's harsh, scary and takes you to another world, a dark place. A place that Black people--all people--don't want to admit exists. Based on the best selling novel "Push" by Sapphire, "Precious" deals with incest, literacy and abuse. The movie, a darling of the film festival circuit, is executive produced by Oprah Winfrey and Tyler Perry and is starting to feel the Oscar buzz. The cutting-edge, independent film was directed by Lee Daniels, the man who worked with Halle Berry on her Academy Award winning performance in "Monster's Ball." ESSENCE.COM sat down with Daniels to discuss the breakthrough performances, the controversy over the "darkness" and "pathology" of the movie, and the real meaning of "Precious."

ESSENCE.COM: So this movie is getting a lot of buzz why is it important for you to tell this story?
LEE DANIELS: When I read the book it was a part of my DNA, I felt very strongly that this story needed to be shared, I could smell the room that Mary was in, I could smell the wallpaper, I could smell the cockroach spray, I could smell the pigs feet. I could feel the texture of the couch. The words jumped off of the page. And, they were apart of my spirit. I understood it...the whole magic of it, you know. The hope. Most people read it and they think it is X-rated. But I saw hope in it.

ESSENCE.COM: Now what do you say to people who see it and they don't see the positive ending--the hope, the redemption? Some people didn't see that.
DANIELS: Really? What did they say, she is dying?

ESSENCE.COM: No, they felt like it was dark and negative at the end. It made them sad.
DANIELS: Life is life. Life is what it is. You know, I like double meanings. I mean one can think that she is marching off to her death. One can think that she overcomes everything. Or look at it as my daughters looks at it, that she is going to live forever. I think it depends on where you are coming from. And, if you think it's sad then you are entitled to feel that way. I feel that cinema is left to interpretation. So really it's like a piece of art.

ESSENCE.COM: How did you get such stunning performances from these actors--Mo'Nique, Gabby, Mariah, Paula Patton,Sherri, Lenny Kravitz.
DANIELS: Everybody in the film with the exception of Gabby was a very good friend. I like working with friends because they trust you and through trust comes great work. It's about following direction and a lot of these actors think they know it all and they don't want to let go. We didn't have a rehearsal process because it's really just talking. All we did was talk. The word is just so brilliantly executed by my screenwriter that they are what they are. So it's important for them to get into my head. On the screen is in my head.

ESSENCE.COM: What did you talk about to set the mood and get them into your head?
DANIELS: I talked about my sex life; I talked about my past addictions. I talked about my dreams or hopes. My fears. We talked about Wendy Williams. We talked about whatever. We talked about everything under the sun because by the time I yell action, we were really one; we are a single unit. And we are speaking in tongues; I'm speaking in tongues. And they are speaking in tongues back grunting my way through direction. It's really a matter of trusting. It's really a deep, deep, you know, unexplainable friendship that is sort of work related, we are very good friends, we're one. There's nothing we don't know about each other when we are in the moment and I think it shows on screen.

ESSENCE.COM: If you could tell the ESSENCE reader one thing about this movie what would you say to them?
DANIELS: It's about loving. Learning to love yourself. Really learning to embrace who you are because Precious has learned to love herself. I think that we are all Precious.

"Precious" opens in theaters nationwide today.

This was such a great movie, even though I cried through much of the movie. It was thought provoking, gritty and at times comical. The acting was superb. Believe it or not I must have been pretty sheltered because I was pretty old when I found out that my own people (Black) indulged in incest and abuse. Maybe I was just one of the lucky ones. Thanks for sharing such a wonderful story that needed to be told.

While this is a new movie, the story is not, "The Color Purple" address similar issues. Incest and abuse is not a "new issues" within the African American communities, what is "new" about it, it's being addressed. Hopefully, those who view it will come away with empathy and not abuse their own children.

The performances in "Precious" were outstanding. The reality of rape, incest, mental illness and illiteracy needs to be explored over and over again. Once again the "establishment" has latched on to a film as supposedly defining the African-American community. The elements of this story can and do occur in any socio/economic class. Why is it so difficult for Hollywood to accept that the African-American community is comprised of many stories and not everyone is from a dysfunctional family. Please remind Hollywood that this story does not define the "African-American experience". One does not have to live in the ghetto to experience the traumas "Precious" tried to survive. When will Hollywood recognize that there are many stories of the African American community yet to be told. Many in Hollywood viewed the "Cosby era" as unrealistic, but readily embrace the idea of "Precious" as being gritty and the reality. When will Hollywood "green-light" other movie/projects that explore other facets of the African-American experience?

Just an excellent movie. That's it. GREAT acting from all the leading roles. The director is amazing and highly talented or being able to pull all of the emotion from the actors.
A very moving portrayal of abuse and neglect from Monique and Gabby. Humorous scenes in the school.
I could go on and on but its a well crafted film with excellent acting, tension, sadness, happiness. Yes, this is happening all over the world in various communities. I'm based in London and this is reflective of all communities here.
The question is how we recognize it, and how we prevent and stop it happening. It's also about how we educate young women on these issues covered in the movie. Its not about colour, race, communities, or whose right and who's wrong. Every person is entitled o their opinion, and as the filmmaker himself has said, it's an art form so open to interpretation.

People may believe that this kind of situation occurs only within the black community, lets hope that they can educate themselves. It's interesting that this view has been revealed. Lets hope that more movies like this are made for that reason.

And once again we have to educate people! I would also like to extend the opportunity for Cindy Lou to explain her comments. Cindy apparently you are not black. Why do you think this is a portrayal of the black community? Now I know ignorance can be bliss but really? This is not just a portrayal of the black community! This is a any young woman no matter the their ethnic back ground. Meaning that this also happening to some young women in a latin community, white community, asian community, etc.. Why would you think in your right mind to make such a comment? Please explain yourself? Own up to your comment because I am tired of people thinking that this is a normal way of life for black people. Oh and while Im at it for the record ghetto is not a race nor a nationality! It is a way of life. So for all you people who think that your white friend is being ghetto(what you consider being black) but you say they are acting black? WRONG!!!!! wtf! Know your sh?t before you make ignorant comments!

There is a terrible, but expected thing going on across america. This movie is not being shown in all theatres! Why? I'm not sure if this is known by Lee Daniels or Oprah and Tyler, but they must be made aware. If there are selected theatres only, why just only one instead of more. How can this knowledge be made aware of, also check your ticket stubs for correct movie.

I am unclear by what Cindy Lou meant in her comment, "FINALLY A MOVIE TO POTRAY THE BLACK COMMUNITY AS IT REALLY IS" Ms. Lou's comment posted 11-14-09 at 12:51PM. If you read this Cindy Lou, could you please go into detail about your comment. Thanks.
This movie was mind blowing. I hope that Mo'Nique receives a Oscar or an Academy Award. All of the actors did a fine job, and I hope people of all backgrounds watch this movie, because it is not a Black, White, Asian, Latin, etc...thing its a HUMAN thing. People of all races are harmed by physical, mental, sexual, and spiritual abuse. Please support it!

Why is it that the movie is only playing in a limited amount of theaters. I went to see it on Friday 13th and they told me it wouldn't not be out until next Friday 20th but it still would not be playing in that theater which is located in a mostly African American area. AMC Grantie Run Media, Pa. It's not right to have it put so far away that a lot of people can't or rather don't have transportation to get there. How can we get the movie closer to our people

I saw the movie today. What a movie! WOW ! The mental illness, incest, both physical and emotional abuse in the movies crosses all races. THIS IS NOT A BLACK THING IT'S A HUMAN BEING THING.IF THIS BASED ON A TRUE STORY, I WOULD LIKE TO KNOW WHERE IS PRECIOUS AN HOW IS SHE AND HER KIDS DOING.

Excellent portrait of truth that we have not dealt with and finally it's on the table. Thank you.

I look forward to seeing this movie, and I pray for those who have experienced this type of abuse. To "I am Precious," sweetie you have to tell. You can't continue to carry this on your shoulders. Sure, it's hard and you don't want to hurt your parents--plus you don't want to be judged--but you have to look past all of that and do the right thing. Although you have forgiven your abuser, you could still be bound by this horrible ordeal (and not even realize it)....Revealing it and talking about it could be the final step towards your complete freedom. I wish you well - God bless.

Saw the movie and I was wondering how they were going to portray some of the abuse scenes, because the things that were mentioned in the book were x rated for sure. Lee did a very good idea of letting you get just a taste w/o acutally seeing everything. I bet the man that played the so called father doesn't even want to be known for his part. I do like they barely showed him though, it would have been too hard to watch him do the things that were mentioned in the book.

I saw the movie and the characters were pretty much true to the book. The whole time I was watching I was wondering who in the audience has or is experiencing the same type or similar thing. Monique did her thing, she plays the loud ignorant wrong person very well.

This movie was exceptional. I have no other words.
