African-American Movie Roles On the Decline

Thank goodness for directors such as Tyler Perry, F. Gary Gray and Lee Daniels. Although they may employ many African-Americans in their films, statistics released by the Screen Actors Guild suggest Hollywood as a whole does otherwise. The report, according to the New York Times, says African-American castings are down to 13.3 percent in 2008, compared to 14.8 percent in 2007. SAG's national president Ken Howard, says "The diverse and multicultural world we live in today is still not accurately reflected in the portrayals we see on screen."-CM
