Commentary: Too Many Savages at the Box Office

avatar_primitives.jpg

What is it with Hollywood and its obsession with alien "savages" this year?

First it was "Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen," following a young man whose thought to have a object in his head that, with the help of an alien machine in Egypt, can yield great powers for the evil creature-like Decepticons to feed off of.

Then it was "District 9," the sci-fi flick that surrounds an alien ghetto in Johannesburg, Africa that was destroyed by the hands of a group of alien abolishers (ironically called the Multi-National United).

And, for the past nine days, it's been Avatar, the mega-blockbuster that follows another group of scientists whose main goal is to wipe out the alien population of Pandora in order to gain access to the highly profitable mineral known as "unobtainium." Funny thing is, in the last film mentioned the so-called aliens also have oddly familiar comparisons to African people--dreads in their hair, larger noses, bones sticking out their noses and dangling from their necks, tails, and shreds of fabric barely covering their private parts as they fight for their lives each day in the deadly forest that is their home.

Granted, that isn't the main focus of these movies. But it's hard to ignore creatures leaping onto the big screen baring similar characteristics to our own kind portrayed as wild savages that must be killed in order to protect the earth or removed to gain access to a powerful substance on their own land that will only propel the white protagonist. This is entertainment? This is what has dominated the American box office all year and has made it billions of dollars?

Hollywood, haven't we come further than this in over eighty years that we don't have to resort to indigenous-type creatures posing some sort of threat to world? We've got to do better than this.

I agree with Jaybird - I doubt the author has seen the movie to have so totally missed the point. The "whites" in the move are not the protagonist - in fact, quite the opposite. Besides the beautiful visual effects, it is a worthy movie in that it raises the awareness of the atrocities of greed, and also reminds us that "white" prosperity was often paid for with the blood of Native Americans and Africans. It also has a substantial environmental message.

I agree. The author must not have seen the movie to have so totally missed the point. The "whites" were not the protagonist at all - it fact, completely the opposite. To me, even beyond the beautiful visual effects, the fact that this very main stream movie brings the atrocities of greed to the forefront is very worthy.

It makes me feel so good to hear rational voices in these comments.

Please construct a decent argument before you sit down to your computer, my dude. Avatar was a fine movie with a solid ( if heavy-handed) environmentalist message that happened to revolve around an event that all races have partaken in; the theft of land by force. Also, I hate to tell you, but denying that we actually did come from TRIBAL SYSTEM is a bit self-hating.There is nothing wrong with our brothers and sisters in our human family who STILL walk around "half naked". Perhaps you have some deeper soul searching to do and should concern yourself less-so with reporting on movies you haven't actually seen.

I dont agree with the article either I cant speak for the other movies but Avatar to me was positive. The native people were not savage it showed them as peaceable, wise and at one with nature. It showed how the westerners who are always trigger happy and destructive could have wrecked a very beautiful world

ok first they have braids not locks get it right, second the person who wrote this article is just following what other journalist have been saying about the racist undertone with no original idea who clearly haven't seen the movie. if you've seen the movie you would know that the avatars are not portrayed as savages rather the the human who came in to destroy them. Also the movie had racial overtone not racist there is a difference and it was purposely made like that to show evil of imperialism of the pass and even now(War on terror). So before you jump to conclusions watch the movie.

"Native American culture " When did braids become apart of the Native American culture? Do Native Americans where bones though their noses? Whatever, I am really getting tired of some Black people worshiping this movie and acting like people can't question it. Nobody is acting over sensitive get over it, tina and others.

This whole site has become nothing but a non-proofreading, insufficient story-telling, instigative and insinuating website. SMDH

I agree with what has been posted. It is a movie nothing more nothing less. Stop trying to make these type of movies aimed at disrepecting afro-americans. Unlike district nine, this movie was about imagination and entertainment.

It's obvious the writer of this piece has not seen the movie and is just looking to once again criticize Hollywood based on assumptions instead of real observation and careful considersation. This is problematic b/c when their is a true instance of offensive material being messaged to the masses thru film we won't have a credible foot to stand on b/c it will seem as if we are too sensitve or not taking time to see the big picture. If anything the film took a stand to protest against American unjust and cruel ways throughout history...

I think the author and some of those leaving comments have taken it a bit too far. I enjoyed the movie from a strictly entertainment perspective, the visuals are ridiculous. From an analytic perspective, I found many issues with the films. However, I didn't take it that blacks or Africans were being addressed. I felt it was directed towards Native Americans, even down to the name- Na'vi. Could be wrong, we all come from different vantage points.

I doubt the author has seen the movie. I saw the movie over the weekend and I thought it was great. The alien people in Avatar more closely resemble the Native American culture than the African culture. They had dreaded hair with tentacles at the end because of a very scientific reason (i won't give away any specific details). They word little clothing because maybe, just maybe aliens don't need clothes like we need clothes, lol. This movie had everything to do with showcasing how the greedy will try to manipulate and castrate a culture in order to serve their own purpose. This is nothing new in Hollywood, so it shouldn't be a surprise.

I had read numerous articles citing the racial undertones of this movie, and trust me there are no undertones of racism, it is BLATANT racism in the movie because that is part of the storyline. Go see the movie and take it for what it is.....a movie. And yes I am Black, lol.

I agree with Tina. There are many native tribes that have been decimated for access to their natural resources in history. This is not a plight exclusive to Africans. This has happened to Native Americans, and indigenous peoples of the Amazon. Their garb is also taken from various cultures around the world. And....the article is wrong - the scientists are working to preserve & study the forest in the movie. It is the corporation & army that wants to kill the indigenous people.

I am so fed up of "touchy African Americans" always playing race card..come on!!!! I am African and lived in Africa for the first 15 years of my life and then spent the next 10 years of my life in the UK studying and I now live and work in the US. Candice Frederick if you have ever been to Africa you would know we as Africans have evolved and are way too modernized. only a small small minority used to live like that in the past. I am sure you are one of those Americans that think that Africans still live in Huts!! stop being over sensitive...my friends who grew up with me in Africa have seen it and we are not offended..stop making an issue when there is none!!
