R&B Icon, Teddy Pendergrass, Dies

Teddy Pendergrass has died on January 13 at Bryn Mawr Hospital in his native Philadelphia. He was 59.

With his commanding baritone vocals and sensual lyrics, Pendergrass swooned the ladies and provided the soundtrack of our love lives.

Before gaining his sex symbol status, a young Pendergrass started singing gospel at churches in Philadelphia.  By age 10, he had become an ordained minister.  A self-taught drummer, Pendergrass began playing the drums for the Philly soul sensation Harold Melvin & The Blue Notes. By 1970, following the departure of the groups lead singer, Pendergrass took over at the helm, leading to the groups most profound success between 1972 and 1975 with chart-topping tracks like "If You Don't Know Me By Now" and the socially conscious "Wake Up Everybody."

In 1976, Pendergrass embarked on a highly successful solo career that began with a self-titled platinum debut followed by a string of gold and platinum selling albums. Best-known for his love ballads, he scored hit-after-hit with songs including "I Don't Love You Anymore," "Close the Door," "Love TKO" and "Turn Off the Lights," among them. The charismatic "Teddy Bear" as he was affectionately called, received multiple Grammy nominations (including one for his album "Joy," released in 1993) and a host of awards.  He even appeared on the February 1979 issue of ESSENCE magazine.

But at the height of his success, Pendergrass suffered a spinal cord injury (SCI) following a car crash in 1982.  The early morning accident left him paralyzed and confined to a wheel chair.  But that didn't kill his spirit. Pendergrass went on to record more successful albums and founded the Teddy Pendergrass Alliance, a non-profit organization that emphasizes quality of life over fixed circumstance.

The singer's son, Teddy Pendergrass II, confirmed his father's death to the Associated Press on Wednesday. Additionally, he stated that the elder Pendergrass experienced "a difficult recovery" after undergoing colon cancer surgery eight months ago.

Pendergrass is survived by his mother, Ida Pendergrass, his wife, Joan, his three children - Teddy Pendergrass II, Trisha Pendergrass and LaDonna Pendergrass - three stepdaughters and seven grandchildren.

God bless,your family.

The day is was introduced to Teddy Pendergrass's music was in 1979, my older cousing was video taping Teddy..she said, he may not can dance, the man really sing..today she is 90 years old.
I was just mesmerized by his voice. When began to sing, he was smooth, sensual, and was very soulful. That Baritone voice, sung of passion, emotion, love, pain and happiness. Teddy did it so well. I have been sitting here, listening to his music, back to his days with Harold Melvin and the Blue Notes.
After his accident, he realized, his voice was there, besides all the obstacles he had to overcome. Teddy may not had that power he once had, the man was still dynamic. His smile was light a ray of sunshine, and still his love for the art of music continued on.
My favorite song, is "It Don't Hurt Now." Rest In Peace Teddy

May those related by kin and friend allow their Faith to be a blanket of comfort around them in their time of sorrow.Teddy is gone from sight but lives forever in his magnificent legacy of music,DVD's and the memories of some of the greatest concerts ever.I remember coming home after a concert at the Greek I told my husband "dont talk Teddy already primed me just enjoy it."He was a phenominal man who is resting in peace - no more pain. What a time they must be having in heaven,Marvin,Teddy,Barry,Lou.Levi,Paul,Eddie,David,Melvin no wonder Johnnie Taylor made that song "Soul Heaven".

To the family I know u are grieving but he's in a much better place. Only God knows best for us. To his wife, children, and most of all his mother, its something you will never forget having ur child leave u.But may he rest in peace. R.I.P. Teddy!!!

59? He died too young.

Teddy was a REAL entertainer who true appeal from his voice to his looks & charm. My favorite song was "Come On & Go With Me". I heard it on the radio & had to laugh out loud at how smooth he was while it was a serenading song convincing the woman to come on over while she gave out her very weak doubts about it. He was soooo smooth!
My heartfelt prayers go out to his family. I only knew him for his music, but they had the real man, the one I've heard such wonderful things about.
He secured his place in music history and in the heart of millions of fans then and those to come by being one that we reference as a consumate artist and professional...the REAL deal!

My heart go to the family Teddy I will always love...

On Sat. January 16th my family and friends had a memorial service in honor of the late Teddy Pendergrass, we played his DVD's and listed to all of his music and even danced a little. Then we took turns expressing how TP became part of our lives. It was really nice.
