The Sights and Sounds of The Soul Train Awards 2009

Soul-Train_articleUSETHIS.jpg

After a two-year hiatus, the award show all about  "Love, Peace, and Soul" returned to TV tonight on BET and Centric. The Soul Train Awards 2009 were hosted by Academy Award-nominated actors Taraji P. Henson and Terrence Howard--who acted up, sang and showed everyone a good time. This year's show honored Chaka Khan, Charlie Wilson and Motown Records. Performances from Keri Hilson, Ryan Leslie, Angie Stone, Fantasia, Erykah Badu, Kandi Burruss and Robin Thicke lit-up the stage. And there was the kiss with Toni Braxton and Trey Songz.

I am shocked at all these negative remarks about the show. I loved the show, it was like a loving, wonderful family reunion with great R & B stars, quite a variety. It was like a wonderful free concert of many wonderful stars such as Raheem Devaughn, Ludacris, Trey Songz, Toni Braxton, Keri Hilson, Charlie Wilson, Angie Stone, Chaka, Bootsie Collins, Fantasia, Johnny Gill, Debarge, Boys-to-Men, Estelle, Crisette michelle and more. Many, many more! It was a great show highlighting and rewarding the stars. I don't agree that it was ghetto, not at all, it had heart and felt like a family had gotten together to commemorate the good things the artists and Soul train had done and enjoy ourselves. It is a shame that we can't do anything for our community that is positive without cutting each other down. I enjoyed it and if BET shows it again, I would recommend that you catch it and judge for yourself. Be blessed!

By the way..Abby, I totally agree with your comment!

Anyone who did not see the show didn't miss a thing....Taraji was loud, ghetto and embarrassing. The performances were not good. Loved Chaka and Charlie Wilson, but they deserved to be honored on a better show.

I 100% agree with all the comments! What the heck? I couldn't sit thru the whole thing. Why did they have Toni Braxton open? Where were all the REAL R&B singers and superstars? Ugh!

Aw I was on the road and missed the show. Will it re-air. If anyone knows let me know. Thanks

I was truly looking forward to the Soul Train Awards show, but was disappointed very quickly. If I can recall, the number of actual awards given away during the taping shown on BET was very small. Also, the editing was terrible. It was obvious when moving between scenes during the show. The tribute to Chaka and Charlie Wilson was wonderful even though I'm still puzzled as to why you wouldn't honor the Gap Band as a whole. The overall look and feel of the show was very cartoonish. Also it would have been very nice to honor Don Cornelius since ST now has new ownership. Perhaps we should have been able to see the entire awards show instead of the poorly edited version in order to appreciate it better.

I agree it was terrible. Taraji was horrible, not at all funny or entertaining. She was killing me with the hair to the side. She was too loud and Terrance is played out. The talent and performances were moderate at best. The only relief was Charlie and Chaka. Why did they keep showing NeNe? Like somebody wanted to keep looking at her ugly self all night!!

This show was a hot mess. The venue looked low grade. Toni Braxton what the hell was she thinking? Wearing those shiny tights. I love The tribute to CharliE and Chaka, but everyone ELSE was a real disappointment. It seems BET and anything affiliated with it IS SO GHETTO. Come on they could of done way better. BET has really brought itself lower in my standards. The content of the shows are so shallow. they give a very low view of what us black people really are.

The show was horrible. I'm so tired of the entertainers today wearing tight revealing clothes and shaking everything!!! I miss the real entertainers. Like Motown back in the day that had real talent and could really hold your attention. They had real talent they didnt' need to be nasty.

I have to say, this was one of the worst award shows I have ever seen. First of all the audience was basically all dressed like they were at a basketball game or something. Fantasia and her screaming just drove me crazy, and Terrance and Taraji had to be the worst hosts in the history of television, they were awful. I hope if they have an award show next year that it will be better and classier than this years show. Awful just Awful!!!!!

I agree, the show was terrible. Whether it is Soul Train awards or whatever show, if BET produces it it is going to be a mess! The quality of their programming is horrible. Do you see this on MTV? They are all owned by Viacom. By the way, if this was an awards show why did it seem more like a concert? Just how many awards did they give out?

I was so looking forward to the show only to be disappoined. Was this show filmed at a mall in Atlanta? It sure did look like it. Terrence and Tarja was awful. Keri Henson reading her acceptance speech from her Blackberry (just ghetto). Too many people on stage trying to sing one song. Fantasia screaming out her song...yuck! At first I thought I was watching 2009 BET Awards all over again.I changed the channel to watch The Dog That Saved Christmas. Somebody said that should have used Jamie Fox to host..Heck no, he is not a good host.

The producers should really take their que from The NAACP Image Award show. Now that's done with class. All that sagging pants, dancing nasty is not a good image for our kids. I sent mine to their rooms.

Horrible show, couldn't even watch the whole thing. Everything from camera work to the stage set to the fourth rate hosting, unglued segments like "motown 50" and a lot of unheard of or amateur performers made it horrible. The award even looked terrible. Terrence singing...horrible. As soon as I saw him with his guitar, I said, oh nooo. Taraj wasn't too great with singing either.

Bring back the classy hosts... the Luther-likes and Patti-likes.

Slim...it's not just you...me and my co-workers were just telling each other 5 minutes ago that Terrace Howard's voice made us turn the t.v. to another station. WOW!!! I stop watching it after a few minutes!!
