Yara Shahidi Wants To Focus On Giving Back Before Heading To College

The ‘Black-ish” actress is taking a gap year before heading to Harvard.

Like her future bestie Malia Obama — honestly, we don’t know, we’re just wishing it into existence — Yara Shahidi isn’t heading straight to Harvard this fall, the actress plans to take a gap year.

Shahidi announced that she’d been accepted to the Ivy League back in June, sharing a photo o of herself in a Harvard sweatshirt.

The 17-year-old told InStyle that she’s taking a year off to focus on filming Black-ish spin-off College-ish and spend doing various philanthropic efforts. "We already did a lot this year," she told the magazine. "But there's so much more to be done.”

Shahidi just wrapped up her senior year through New York’s Dwight School’s online program. She plans to double major in social studies and African-American studies once she begins her studies at Harvard.
