Flashback Friday: Golden Globes
Mo'Nique made us proud, didn't she? With those now infamous legs, she walked on stage and accepted the first award of the night, which coincidentally was her very first golden trophy, at this year's 67th Golden Globes. At home we cheered, gave each other hi-fives, and nodded our heads yes, because no one other than Mary Jones, (her character in "Precious: Based on the novel 'Push' by Sapphire"), deserved it. Here, we tip our hats to the supporting actors and actresses who shine on the silver screen. It is those who play the #2 spot, that aid in getting films the extra recognition it may need... Although the song's official title is "King Holiday," it was the catchy chorus that always made us want to sing along. As we prepare to honor the memory of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., we wanted to take you back to the time when we celebrated his birthday becoming a national holiday. The year was 1986 and Dr. King's youngest son, Dexter, assembled the King Dream Holiday Chorus and Holiday Crew to record this song to commemorate the nation's observance of his late father's birthday. The group of singers and rappers who participated in the project was a virtual who's who of 80s music--think El DeBarge, Kurtis Blow, Whodini, New Edition, Run-DMC, Stacy Lattisaw, Menudo, Lisa Lisa and Full Force, the Fat Boys and a then up-and-coming singer by the name of Whitney Houston. What a joyous time in our history! For more Flashback Fridays, click here.

Don't call it a comeback, Jenifer Lewis isn't returning to the silver screen with her role in "The Princess and the Frog," the hardworking actress never actually left. You may remember her from the cult-classic "Jackie's Back," where she played a witty high-powered super diva or her unforgettable role as Zelma Bullock in Tina Turner's biopic, "What's Love Got To Do With It," which she calls, "her greatest role." Now, Lewis is lending her vocals to Mama Odie, a toothless 200-year-old fairy Godmother in Disney's first animated movie starring a Black princess. ESSENCE.COM caught up with the refreshingly down-to-earth actress who shares her feelings on the controversy surrounding the film, what we can all learn from her character Mama Odie, and her fun heydays in other successful flicks.
