'Go There' Wednesdays: Purple Lips
Purple is everywhere this summer -- eyeshadow shades, sundresses, stilettos, and now, lips! All the top makeup brands have debuted their own versions of purple lipstick, stain or gloss, and each one is prettier than the last. The best part? The shade is so rich and luscious on brown skin... especially brown skin with a tan (don't believe us? Check out Tracee Ellis Ross!). To get this look at home...

There are a few shades that just scream "summer," and coral is at the top of the list. Flirty without being overt, girly without being virginal, this vivid shade looks smoking hot on brown skin! Right now, we're obsessed with coral lip gloss -- it's just such a pretty, goes-with-everything neutral, and it somehow manages to punch up our mid-summer tan. Try MAC Superglass in Gift Wrap ($18), a shimmery, deep pinky-coral, or Sephora Super Shimmer Lipgloss in Hot Coral ($10), a berry-peach hue.

When we first saw this shot of Leona Lewis, we were immediately obsessed. We couldn't figure out if it was the hot pink lips (genius), or the horn-rimmed specs (librarian chic) or the side-braid (so on-trend it's almost over) -- but we soon figured it out. It's her slightly metallic, fully fierce, dove gray nails...

Smoky eyes are always sexy, but in the summertime, the general rule is that lighter makeup looks fresher. At the 2010 amFar New York Inspiration Gala, Zoe Saldana proved that rules were made to be broken! Her vampy, sooty, khol-smudged eyes were to die for -- not only did the look give her eyes a mysterious, feline quality, the imperfect-on-purpose application is a cinch to reproduce at home...

Generally, pink eyeshadow is not a fabulous idea--go too hard when applying, and you can end up looking flu-ish. But when we saw Selita Ebanks at the 'Celebrity Apprentice Season 3' finale rocking a face full of pink makeup, we changed our minds. So chic! The key is that her eyeshadow is a barely-there, super-sheer shade (blink and you'll miss it), and her rosy blush is equally subtle. She saves the drama for her lips, with a shimmery, juicy burst of watermelon gloss--and it adds focus to her look. To get in the pink at home, try Smashbox Eyeshadow in Fizz ($16), Tarte Cheek Stain in Natural Beauty ($30), and Lancome Juicy Tubes Jelly in Raspberry Ice ($18)...

One of this season's hottest trends is bold, colorful eyeshadow (think "I Wanna Dance with Somebody"-era Whitney Houston). Admittedly, Crayola-striped eyes are a bit extreme for day, but there are ways to rock a pop of color without looking like Rainbow Brite. Take a cue from Solange Knowles, and instead of applying a loud shade all over your lid, simply trace it along your top and bottom lashlines with a skinny eyeliner brush...

On Monday, R&B goddess and reality star Monica breezed by ESSENCE's office to chat about her hot new album, "Still Standing." She was absolutely charming, a true sweetheart...and ladies, her eyeshadow was fierce! "Miss Thang" was rocking expertly-blended gold, bronze and copper shadows that looked flawless with her nutmeg-brown skin. Here's how to rock the look at home... Red lipstick is always sexy, but the traditional red lip (you know, the super-deep, ultra-vampy Old Hollywood hue) can be a tad too rich for Spring. Leave it to Kelis to give us the perfect example of a scarlet hue that's fresh enough to work for the sunny season: Orange-red! Why didn't we think of this before? It does the "fancy" thing that red lipstick's supposed to do, but the orange undertones give the hue a lighter, brighter, slightly tropical feel. We're huge fans of Sephora Lip Attitude Lipstick in Brick Imagine ($12), a semi-sheer brick red/tangerine; and Givenchy Rouge Interdit Shine Lipstick in Sun Shine ($28), a golden-coral-ish crimson that comes in the hottest tube we've ever seen. Vampy eyes don't have to involve extreme black liner, tons of lashes and layers of blended-out-to-there khol shadow (although, it definitely gets the job done!). Sometimes, the sexiest look is the simplest one. Exhibit A: Model Selita Ebanks' sultry, softly smoky eyes. To do, simply use your finger to blend a dove-gray shadow from lashes to crease, and then apply a shimmery pearl hue on browbones and on the inner corner of your eyes (try Estee Lauder Signature Shadow Quad in Black Smoke, $35; it contains both shades). And instead of heavy liner, create a delicate line by tracing the inner rim of your bottom lid with black pencil--try Cover Girl Perfect Blend Eye Pencil in Basic Black, $4.49.
