The fall TV lineup is super lit and the Urbanworld Film Festival is giving anxious fans a sneak peek.
The 20th Annual Urbanworld Film Festival announced additions to its schedule exclusively with ESSENCE, including the screenings of HBO’s Insecure and FOX’s Shots Fired.
Created by resident “awkward black girl” Issa Rae, Insecure is a comedy that looks at the friendship of two black women, their uncomfortable experiences and racy tribulations. The episode to be screened was directed by Melina Matsoukas (who’s director credits include Beyonce’s “Formation”). A Q&A with moderated by Bevy Smith featuring Rae, co-star Jay Ellis and Matsoukas will immediately follow.

If drama is more your flavor, Shots Fired is the way to go. Examining the dangerous aftermath of two racially charged shootings in a small Southern town, this dramatic new event series—from creators and executive producers Gina Prince-Bythewood and Reggie Rock Bythewood—focuses on a “why done it?” and a “who done it?” This explosive look at the criminal justice system features actors Sanaa Lathan and Stephan James. A Q&A with the showrunners and stars will immediately follow this screening as well.
All events will take place from September 21-25, 2016 at Manhattan's AMC Empire 25 on 234 West 42nd Street. Festival ambassadors Ava DuVernay and David Oyelowo are confirmed to attend in addition to actors Cory Hardict, Aisha Hinds, DeWanda Wise and LaLa Anthony.
