From hashtags created to remember the most ridiculous news moments to killing off your favorite living, breathing celebrities, there’s no doubt that when it comes to the Internet, Twitter does it best. And last night, Twitter did not let you down because you likely found yourself whispering #BlacksRule before bed.
Hours before the Republican National Convention kicked off in Cleveland, Ohio, Twitter users across the board picked up on social media’s latest trending topic: the image of a White man standing in front of his Mississippi home with his state's flag (illustrating the Confederate flag in the pattern) taken down and burned, and the words "Blacks Rule" spray painted on his driveway.
While the trend only lasted a few hours, the plot twist is that this incident actually took place last year. But at the end of the day, everyone was saying the same thing, “There’s no way a Black person made this up.” Followed by a nice, “Y'all tried it.” From there, the memes and tweets spoke for themselves.
Many jokingly insinuated that this ridiculous hashtag was created to boost the first night of the RNC, but we’ll never actually know.
Check out how Black Twitter and everyone else in between awkwardly verified that #BlacksRule.
