Serena Williams finally beats out Maria Sharapova for title of highest paid female athlete.

And it’s about damn time. Serena Williams has finally eclipsed Maria Sharapova as the highest paid woman in the world of sports earning $28.9 million in the past twelve months, Forbes confirms.

Let’s recap Ms. Williams’ career, shall we? Over the course of her phenomenal career, Williams has won 21 Grand Slam titles, has earned the title of Associated Press Female Athlete of the Year four times, and appeared in Beyoncé’s Lemonade visual album.

And yet for 11 years in a row, Sharapova has outranked Williams as the world’s highest-paid female athlete, though Williams was better on the court, with a 19-2 record against Sharapova. To reiterate, Williams has slayed Sharapova in every match since 2005.
