Upcoming Documentary 'Straight/Curve' Tackles Body Diversity in the Fashion Industry

"Straight/Curve" is a controversial new documentary that investigates the industry's prevailing diversity issues regarding race, size, and age, while also considering what the future of fashion will look like.

Although we continue to see a lot of media attention surrounding the lack of diversity in fashion, there hasn't been a lot of effort to examine and organize the conversation until now.

"Straight/Curve" is a controversial new documentary that promises to investigate the industry's prevailing diversity issues regarding race, size, and age, while also considering what the future of fashion will look like.

In an interview with Refinery29, the film's creator Jenny McQuaile shared her thoughts on fashion's current diversity quotient and exclusionary practices.

She expressed optimism that the ongoing trend toward diversity is not just a fad, and that even as an aspiration or fantasy, fashion doesn't need to be one size.

She also said she received polarizing responses from brands courted for the film — either 100 percent for or against, but maintains any shift in the hierarchy away from the use of exclusively white, thin, and young models will trickle down to create more widespread change.

Hopefully widespread enough to impact everyday women as McQuaile notes it is hard to wake up and feel good about ourselves everyday. And "it gets worse if it is compounded by the industry."
