As much as the upcoming 'Roots' reboot is about powerful imagery and a message that's more neccessary now than ever, it's also about bringing history to life.
Academy Award nominated costume designer Ruth Carter, who has worked on iconic films like Malcom X, Amistad and The Butler, is lending her expertise to the film in the form of a painstakingly detailed and telling wardrobe for the cast.
While sharing history lessons, like the fact that most slaves often got only one outfit per year, Carter not only offers a look into what the women of yesteryear wore, but what day-to-day life was like for them.
Get a behind the scenes look at her designs and the story behind them in the clip above.
