You know Lamorne Morris as the adorable prankster Winston Bishop on FOX’s New Girl, or maybe you’re a fan of his hilarious YouTube spoofs like Black Rapunzel, or maybe you’ve been riding with him since his BET hosting days. No matter. You’ll get to see more of Morris’ comedic talent in the third installment of Ice Cube’s star-studded franchise, Barbershop: The Next Cut (debuting April 15).
Don’t expect the Chi-Town native to be just another alpha male in the pack, there’s plenty of that with Common, JB Smoove and Cedric the Entertainer in the mix. “When I took the role, I thought, why I gotta be soft? Why can’t I be some leading man figure?” laughs The Second City alum. “But then I realized that’s every other guy in the movie.”
Although Morris’ Jerrod is as moist as a slice of “Dunkin Hines” red velvet cake, the youngest of four siblings brings the improv funny, delivers memorable one-liners, gets a smooch from a female stylist and makes his clipper game look official onscreen.
“There was a time when I was too broke to pay for a haircut, so I had to cut my own hair. Then I’d cut my friends’ hair. That’s how I got nice,” says Morris who’s in the lab working on a comedy album and a musical mockumentary. “I wouldn’t trust me on someone’s head now. You’d be very patchy. But the lining? The lining would be on point.”
