Pope Francis announced Tuesday that he’d be opening a special “mercy” window for women who’ve had abortions to confess and be forgiven by the Roman Catholic Church.
According to CNN, the announcement will give priests full authority to absolve Catholic women of their guilt surrounding an act that the church considers to be a serious “moral evil.”
“The forgiveness of God cannot be denied to one who has repented,” the Pope said, adding that he has met “many women” scarred by the “agonizing and painful” act of having an abortion.
The Mercy Year starts December 8.
