ESSENCE.com's "New and Next" column spotlights the brightest new talents we think you should know. This week we meet singer Treasure Davis, a former backup for the likes of Keri Hilson and Nicki Minaj, whose sweet soprano will have you thinking of Deniece Williams. Davis takes her musical cues from the likes of Jazmine Sullivan and Mary J. Blige, singing the perfect R&B break-up records, and summer anthems. Her debut EP, Heart Flavored Summer, is out now.

How would you describe your sound?
I would say I probably sound a little bit like Janet Jackson for her intimacy and soft tones, a little like Lauryn Hill for her truth, and a little Mary J Blige for her raw emotion.

What story are you telling with your music?
Ahh…it's the story of a girl growing through love, discovering herself, and forgiveness. It could be any girl, but all of these stories come from a true place.

Why should we get to know you, and your music?
We're here [me and my music] to bring light to stories that hopefully inspire somebody to laugh, to think, to smile, to forgive, or heal. I put a lot of truth and heart into the music.

Who would you say are your greatest influences?
My greatest influences are all of the people I meet who continue to strive everyday towards a dream or a goal or a promise. The faces I see everyday. True story. Strangers, friends and loved ones alike. Everybody has a story. Seeing how other people dance through theirs motivates me.

What do you want a listener to walk away with?
A feeling in their heart...a good time...or an epiphany...or even a really good cry. That's okay too.

Who or what would be on your all-time music playlist?
ColdPlay, Kanye, Marvin Gaye, Lauryn Hill, Miguel, Mali Music, and definitely some reggae

Finish the sentence: My music is…life.

Treasure’s debut EP, Heart Flavored Summer, is out now.
