Discover Your Worth! Sometimes bad days turn into bad seasons. I recently found myself in one of those times. Driving my niece to school one morning, I felt everything in me whisper “Lord, I give up.”
As we rode she said, “Auntie, let’s play the count game!” Sometimes as we ride, we pick out cars of a certain color. I asked her which color. “Yellow“ she shouted! I cautioned her that finding yellow cars would be difficult and maybe she should pick another color. She responded with the equally challenging, orange.
Before I could change her mind, she shouted, “Oh, there goes one!” And I looked up to see a cute orange car passing in front of us. Before we went another block, we saw two more orange cars!
As I turned the corner, a bright yellow car sat in front of me. I trailed it for nearly half my trip. God had proven me wrong. I'd told my niece to change her expectations and desires based on what seemed to be a nearly impossible task. But that morning our journey was filled with orange and yellow cars.
As we neared her school, I started looking for parking. Normally it is difficult to find a space as parents and buses drop kids off. To my surprise, right in front of the school was a wide-open space big enough for two cars . The only car parked there was an adorable yellow VW Beetle.
Some may call it a coincidence, but my faith sees more. At times, quitting seems like the best option, but during those seasons, we must remember that we will often see only what we seek to find.
We can access the fuel to keep going by controlling our thoughts and focus. Here’s how:
Get Clarity: That morning when I prayed, my heart longed to know that God heard me and I wasn’t forgotten. Those yellow and orange cars along the way gave me the sense of being “seen” that I needed.
Sometimes we pursue “things” in hopes that they will satisfy a deeper need. One of the best ways to stay in the fight is to dig deep and find out what you really want. Often, the new tube of lipstick isn’t just the desire for a new color; it can represent the desire to be different. Understanding why we want what we want, can give us the insight to find other ways to meet our needs.
Talk About It: Sharing with others can help lighten the load. For weeks, I kept trying to just fix myself. Talking opened the door for two things to happen. First, I was reminded that I am not alone. Many times others are struggling with the same issues. Secondly, I was able to receive new perspectives about my situation and myself. Often, we forget our past victories and our strengths. But having others in our corner can help us get back up and fight on!
Spend Time In Sweet Spots: One of my sweet spots in life is time with my niece. Others are family time, writing and reading a good back. When our world seems to be falling apart, we must rush to our sweet spots. They provide replenishment and reminders of what is still good in our lives.
Do Your Work! Schedule time on your calendar each day for the next week to apply one of the above steps. Get clarity by listening to your heart.
