ESSENCE Poll: What is Your Relationship with Thongs?

A New York Times article says that women are turning their back(sides) on thongs. Are you?

Young women are ditching their skimpy g-strings in exchange for pieces offering a little more coverage. Welcome (back) to the age of innocence.

A new article from the New York Times found that fewer and fewer Millennials are buying thongs, and that—surprise!—they'd rather wear pieces like boy shorts and high-waisted briefs that offer a little more booty coverage. Thong sales have dropped a drastic 7 percent over the last year, while sales in full-coverage "granny panties" have risen 17 percent.

"Within Millennial and Generation Y consumer groups, it's considered cool to be wearing full-bottom underwear," market analyst Bernadette Kissane told the Times. "Thongs have had their moment."

So why the change? One plus-size lingerie model told the Times that she felt that the shift was an homage to a time when fuller body shapes were the norm. Plus, as we ladies know, she said that full-coverage panties do help define a woman's shape (hel-lo, Spanx!). Beyond cosmetic reasons, thongs are also to blame for some vaginal health problems. The movement of the thin piece of fabric can cause bacteria to shift more easily from, um, back to front.
