If you're part of the minority who has yet to discover Black Twitter (BT), you're late—#shadenoshade. But don't worry, we got you!

1. IT'S NOT A WEB SITE.

If Twitter were a city, Black Twitter would be the Black part of town. Everyone can observe it, but only certain users understand it enough to successfully navigate it.

2. IT POLICES SOCIAL INJUSTICE.

If you've wronged Black America in any way—whether you're a politician or the state of Florida—you might be checked by BT. Past victims include Paula Deen (who lost her TV show and endorsements) and Juror B37 (whose book about the George Zimmerman trial was nixed).

3. FOR EVERY CONVERSATION, THERE'S A HASHTAG.

It streamlines the #conversation and adds #humor.

4. IT'S THE PLACE TO BE DURING PRIME TIME.

#RHOA, #LHHATL, #Scandal, #Emmys, #Oscars, #Grammys, #BETAwards—from ratchet reality TV to awards shows, Black Twitter has something to say.

5. IT'S NOT ALWAYS WHAT YOU KNOW, BUT WHO YOU KNOW.
