A debate on bullying is taking place in Porterville, California due to the city's mayor suggesting that children needed to "grow a pair" in response to a student-led anti-bullying effort.

City Councilwoman Virginia Gurrolla introduced the program to the City Council and asked them to support the students' efforts to build safe zones off-campus for teens who are experiencing bullying after school. Mayor Cameron Hamilton responded: "I mean, I am against bullying, but I am getting damn tired of it being used as a mantra for everything that ills the world when all most people have to do is a grow a pair and stick up for them damn selves."

Gurrola rebutted, "It is hard to stand up and maybe grow a pair when you are maybe a 10-year-old little girl."
