The Look Last Night: How to Get Lupita's Golden Globes Hair

Over the past several months we've fallen in love with Lupita Nyong'o's signature short fro. The look is so simple, polished and chic—and of course, we just love our natural-hair girls. So last night when we saw Lupita breezing along the Golden Globes red carpet with an asymmetrical (Grace Jones-inspired) straight take on the cropped do, we had to get details. Naturalistas are always looking for fresh styling options—and we're here to provide. Here's all the intel from Larry Sims, celebrity hairstylist and the man behind Lupita's mane.
Start with Moisture
Liberally apply a curl activating, moisturizing mist to your hair to give it some shine and protect it during blow drying. Sims use Smooth ‘N Shine Go Pro Curls Curl-Licious Mist.
Create a Deep Part
Next, Larry used a rat tail comb to insert a dramatic side part on the right side of Lupita's head. He then took the part back to the crown and combed her hair to each side. A rat-tail comb is key becaue it helps you get a precise part and is easier to handle.
Blow It Out
Sims blow dried Lupita's naturally kinky hair, leaving it with a lovely soft texture. The key is to not go too straight or the hair would lose its shape and volume. He used Smooth ‘N Shine Go Pro Curls Butter Bouncin’ to hydrate and give her strands an easy moldable texture.
To keep the style in place all night, Larry used Got2b 2sexy Voluptuous Volume Hairspray. Use any strong holding spray to maintain the style's height throughout the night.
