Last week, ESSENCE's December cover star Gabrielle Union celebrated her 41st birthday with friends in Miami right after watching her longtime beau Dwyane Wade play a home game with the Miami Heat. Even though Wade couldn’t stick around to help his beautiful girlfriend celebrate, according to PageSix, he did make an appearance at her party to give his ladylove a very special gift – her very own Miami Heat championship ring.

Were you expecting an engagement ring instead? Many of Union's fans were, and although an engagement has been rumored before, the couple have never confirmed any plans to wed.

Does an engagement ring make a couple any more committed? Women are often very divided on this issue. Some women insist that the only piece of jewelry they want (or need) to receive from the man they’re dating seriously is an engagement ring, while others insist that they don't need a material item to be happy and committed.

Engagement or no engagement, Wade and Union clearly seem madly in love everywhere that they go. They’ve been dating since 2009 and they’re frequently seen supporting each other at events and sharing romantic moments from their love story on Instagram and Twitter.

So, you tell us: Is an engagement ring the only way he can show you that he's serious about you or are you open to other ways for him to prove his devotion to you and only you? Let’s discuss.
