On July 4, 2013, the 2013 ESSENCE Festival will kick off its first ever "Family Union Day."

Festival-goers and their families can attend empowerment panels, family-friendly games, activities, food, cooking competitions, fireworks, musical guests and more—all free of charge and open to the public.

From Noon to 3 p.m. (CST) at the Ernest N. Morial Convention Center attendees can hear words of wisdom, advice and motivational stories of success. The event will be hosted by Master P. and his kids Romeo and Cymphonique. New Orleans Mayor Mitch Landrieu will also be participating along side Dr. Steve Perry, Dr. Denese Shervington, Tonya Lewis Lee and Traci and Trina Braxton.

From 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. (CST) at Woldenberg Park, in partnership with Audubon Nature Institute, attendees can participate in cooking competitions and demonstrations with celebrity chefs. Family games and actives will also be available. Musical guests for the afternoon include Biz Markie, the Brass-A-Holics, CUPID, Doug E Fresh, Gina Brown & Anutha Level, Tweet and the Stooges Brass Band. A fireworks display will end the night.

"The ESSENCE Festival is catering to families for a truly multi-generation experience," says ESSENCE Communications Inc. President Michelle Ebanks. "We are delighted to invited and welcome families to New Orleans for four days of empowerment, music, food and culture, and our new 'Family Reunion Day' is a wonderful setting for families to renew ties and bonds in a meaningful way."
