The scandalous one-hour premiere of the sixth season of BET’s scripted drama The Game caused a Twitter frenzy last night.
It was a bittersweet moment for diehard fans, who watched along with their smart phones glued to their fingers, as the show said goodbye to Melanie and Derwin’s storyline, and subsequently the lovable stars who played them, actors Tia Mowry and Pooch Hall, and hello to new blood, actors Lauren London and Jay Ellis, who signed on for the season.
There were decidedly mixed reactions. Fans laughed. (Did Tasha Mack really just call new character Bryce “The Blueprint” Westbrook “Blues Clues”?) They cried. (After learning he’d been traded, Derwin’s tears just looked so real, right?) And, they raised a few eyebrows. (Was that a new record for the most casual sex and binge drinking ever shown in the first 10 minutes of a show?)
While the departure of beloved characters “Med School” and “Ding-Dong” have left too bad a taste in many fans’ mouths for them to move forward with the show, it seems the newest storyline, in which London’s TV-Star character Keria will inevitably fall for Ellis’ football star playboy “Blueprint,” has other fans intrigued and ready to see what comes next for the sexy cast.
While Brandy’s newlywed (and new money) diva Chardonnay’s tacky fashion choices and Ciara’s over-sexualized guest appearance kept fans talking, it was the apparent lack of many female characters truly worth rooting for, besides no-nonsense Momager Tasha Mack (Wendy Raquel Robinson) that really seemed to set Black Twitter off.
Yes, The Game is back on for another season, but will you stay and play? Tell us your thoughts on the show’s premiere below.
