The five-time Grammy winner who is known for disco hits like “Hot Stuff” and “Bad Girls, died in Florida early this morning.
In a statement released to ESSENCE.com, Summer's family calls the legendary singer "a woman of many gifts, the greatest being her faith."
"While we grieve her passing, we are at peace celebrating her extraordinary life and her continued legacy," adds the family. "Words truly can't express how much we appreciate your prayers and love for our family at this sensitive time."
Summer and her family have kept her condition under wraps while she reportedly tried to finish work on new material for an album, according to TMZ.
She is survived by her husband of 32 years, Bruce Sudano, their three daughters, and four grandchildren.
