Florida Highway Patrol says Hazell’s 2007 Cadillac Escalade was traveling at a “high rate of speed” when he rear-ended a tractor trailer on Route 27 in Lake Wales, Florida at 1:45 a.m.
Unfortunately, he was not wearing a seat belt. Authorities aren’t sure if alcohol was involved.
He was pronounced dead on the scene.
Amar’e was scheduled to take on the Utah Jazz tonight, but left his teammates to be with family.
New York Knicks coach, Mike D’Antoni, says Amar’e was very close with his bother.
“I know he’s very close to his brother so my heart goes out to him,” he told the New York Daily News. “He cherishes his family. He does a great job of maintaining all the relationships. It’s just a trying moment for him.”
“My thoughts and prayers and everything are with him. Whatever time he needs to take he’ll take. And we’ll get him back as soon as possible.”
