Last year, I became addicted to “Awkward Black Girl,” an online show about the misadventures of a, well, awkward Black girl and her follies at work and in her personal life. And when I say addicted, I mean I watch each episode over and over the way I do re-runs of “The Cosby Show” and “Martin,” and howl every time like it’s a first viewing. Like many, I’ve been not-so-patiently waiting for the season finale to discover if the heroine will choose her Howard-grad co-worker, or his friend (aka the white guy), as her romantic interest. (How a major network hasn’t picked up this show, baffles me.)
In the meantime, I’ve been keeping myself occupied by tuning into Black & Sexy TV. It recently released mini-episodes of “The Couple,” an upcoming series by Dennis Dortch and Numa Perrier, creators of the film “A Good Day to be Black and Sexy.” Exact details on the show are hard to come by, but from what I can piece together, the show revolves around an attractive 20-something Black couple that lives together. They have an amazing chemistry that leaps of the mini-screen.
Even if you’re not officially cohabitating, if you’re in a long-term relationship, you’ll recognize — and laugh out loud — at some of the scenarios in the trailers. In one clip, the boyfriend wakes up his sweetheart to convince her to move to her side of the bed.
“There’s no sides, I’m good right here,” the girlfriend says when she comes to. He insists, “This has been my side for two years. Feel that groove right there? That lil’ sway in the mattress….?” She won’t budge. He tries a different approach. “You want to wake up with Murray’s hair grease all over your face?” He finally gives up and tries to lie on the at-most six inches of unoccupied space on “his” side of the bed.
Another clip shows what happens when the couple gets the munchies, and the boyfriend is charged with hunting and gathering food. What he brings back?! Watch and see!
“The Couple is [creative director] Jeanine [Daniel’s] inspiration based on her previous relationships and it has now expanded into some of the day-to-day situations Dennis and I experience as a real life couple,” creator Numa Perrier told Clutch Magazine. “ We all experience relationships so not only is it relatable, but it drives us as human beings.”
If trailers for “The Couple” have stirred your interest, you’re in luck. Black & Sexy TV features plenty more web TV series to keep you occupied until “The Couple” debuts on Valentine’s Day. My current favorite is “Drought Warriors” about an attractive and virile man who hasn’t had sex in over a month. (I know you’re about to click now, so remember to turn the volume down if you’re at work.)
