Wanda Sykes Speaks on Surviving Breast Cancer

Wanda Sykes on Breast Cancer
With just a few days left in October, also known as Breast Cancer Awareness Month, Wanda Sykes is opening up about her decision to have both breasts removed after being diagnosed with cancer earlier this year.

The comedian and actress tells People she was miserable, but now she's "whole again."

"My first thought was, 'Really? Me, breast cancer?' I just couldn't believe it," she says. Sykes underwent a bilateral mastectomy in August and she admits it was no easy ride for her. "I was miserable. Every day I had to change bandages and look at it, and it was not pretty at all. I just wanted my life back."

Now Sykes has fully recovered and is back to her loving wife Alex and twin children, Olivia and Lucas. "I feel whole again, I really do. I've told them, 'Mommy's boo-boo is much better now.'"

Sykes unfortunately joins a list of celebrities affected by breast cancer. But we're thankful she survived and is back to living a normal, healthy life.
