Born to an exiled South African father and a Jewish activist mother, Goapele’s passionate, soulful voice made turned her albums — including Even Closer, and this year’s Break of Dawn — into neo-soul must-haves. Sure, she’s a fabulous mother, activist and singer — but let’s get into that hair for a second, shall we?

From dreadlocs to twist-outs and braids, Goapele’s always had inventive, fashion-forward chemical-free ‘dos. Here, we sat down with the cornrowed cutie to chat about her natural hair secrets, favorite styles and the products she can’t live without.
