American Apparel has cornered the market on affordable, hipster-esque basics, but when it comes to their hiring practices, the company is way off. Gawker.com recently acquired internal documents and employee testimonials that prove the store has been discriminating against Black women interviewing for positions with the company. A former employee recalls being told to avoid "the trashy kind that come in. We're not trying to sell our clothes to them. Try to find some of these classy black girls with nice hair, you know?" The same employee also remembers a district manger "instructing me to tell two of my employees, both of whom happened to be Black females, to stop straightening their hair. I refused to do this." How crazy is this? Will knowing about American Apparel's hiring practices affect your shopping at their stores in the future? Let us know in the comments section!
