Word On the Street: Celebrating Martin Luther King, Jr.

Martin Luther King Jr., the Reverend, academic scholar and Civil Rights activist, practiced non-violence and civil disobedience to help change the racial inequalities of his time. Born January 15, 1929, King helped transform the face of America with his eloquent speeches on race, community service and education.

In celebration of Dr. King today, ESSENCE.com hit the streets of Harlem, New York, to speak to real people about the brilliant scholar. Some reflected, some shared quotes and some simply thanked the historical icon.

The King Center in Atlanta, Georgia, also shared a few photos with ESSENCE.com readers of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., and his family. Join us as we remember an important man.
