President Obama Wishes Country a Happy New Year




President Barack Obama used the White House website to deliver an optimistic New Year's message, saying there are "brighter days are ahead of us" and although "the challenges are great each of us has the courage and determination to rise up and meet them."

The president acknowledged what a difficult year 2009 had been for many Americans, but stayed hopeful saying "it is that spirit that has kept the American dream alive for generations."
