Serena Williams Slapped with $82,000 Fine

Serena Williams breaks a new record--but we doubt she'll be celebrating this achievement. According to The Los Angeles Times and the Associated Press, Williams was fined $82,500 for her outburst during this year's U.S. Open. This sets a record as the highest fine for a Grand Slam offense. In addendum to the fine, if Williams has another "major offense" in the next two years, she could be suspended from the U.S. Open the following year (2012).

Williams joins a long list of tennis stars who've been fined for tantrums during Grand Slams. U.S. Player Jeff Tarango was ordered to pay $48,000 for an offense at the 1995 Wimbledon games; Patrick McEnroe was fined $17,500 during the 1987 U.S. Open matches for swearing at the referee and Roger Federer, along with two other players, received a $1500 fine for using profanity at this year's U.S. Open.
