President Obama will sign a letter allowing health care and other benefits to same-sex partners of federal employees, according to CNN.com. The signing will take place today in the Oval office. Although this is a step in a different direction than Prop 8, the President still faces criticism because of his decision last week to support the Defense of Marriage Act that opposes same-sex marriage. The Obama administration is also under fire for not revoking the military’s “don’t ask, don’t tell” policy, which bars officials from asking a member’s sexual orientation but also bars them from revealing it. Yet, President Obama acclaims himself as a “a fierce advocate for gay and lesbian Americans.”—Shavon S. Greene
