In the long awaited decision, President Obama has finally chosen federal Judge Sonia Sotomayor as his nominee to replace Justice David Souter on the U.S. Supreme Court, according to CNN.com. Not only will she be the second female to currently sit on the Supreme Court bench (along with Ruth Bader Ginsberg) but she will be the first Hispanic if her nomination is approved by the Senate Judiciary Committee and the full Senate.
While an official statement from the President has yet to be issued, he did say in an interview on Saturday that he wants to choose someone with “intellectual firepower.”
Judge Sotomayer, who originally hails from the Bronx, New York, is expected to be approved by the mostly Democratic Senate this summer.
